Overcast
Total Time = 2h 16m
Overall Rank = 3/84
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/4
Pre-race routine:

Same as always.

Bagel w/ Peanut Butter, a banana and 1 cup of coffee. I got to the race site about 6:45 and got setup quickly before the TA closed at 7:15.
Event warmup:

500 yard swim warm-up.

The goal for this race: WIN
Swim
  • 27m 14s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

I went out aggressively. I located my two main competitors at the start of the swim and knew the one was a very good swimmer.

Went out hard to the first turn buoy located 100m from shore and then stuck with 2 other swimmers all the way around the rectangle. The one faster swimmer got away early and separated himself and found myself in this second group with lots of open water ahead.

I was swimming very well and able to stay right on the buoy line. Since the three of us were still together by the turn buoys back to home I jumped on their feet and drafted the rest of the way home. It was pretty clear how much effort I saved from this as I jumped off a couple times to get away but could not so just saved the energy and enjoyed the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Good swim. The course was at least 100m long as admitted by the RD. This swim course is always long it seems.
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Bike
  • 1h 04m 56s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.96 mile/hr
Comments:

AP: 231
NP: 233
IF: .86
VI: 1.01

Just no jump in the legs. This was about 10W less than what I was anticipating. Just 2 weeks ago I held 242 NP and ran very well so I was thinking more around 245W but my legs just never came around.

I was in second out of TA and came off the bike in 2nd.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Quick
Run
  • 40m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

I came off the bike running pretty well and was hoping maybe I could catch this guy and win the race. As the turn around kept inching closer I still never saw him and knew that was a good sign. He was probably 90 seconds up the road still by the turn around but 3rd was also gaining on me.

Eventually that guy passed me (and eventually past 1st) to get the win. I ran well and ultimately finished 40 seconds back from 1st place.
What would you do differently?:

Really gave my all on the run as I was hurting that last 2 miles.
Post race
Event comments:

Long season and happy with the race.

Really close to my first OA wins - 90 seconds at Ludington and 40 seconds here. Next year I will get it.

Two years ago I weighed in at a hefty 280 lbs and was a mess. Now I'm a lean 180 lbs and train daily. What a difference healthy eating, exercise, and self discipline can make!

During this past weekend's Olympic distance triathlon, lack of fuel and dehydration hurt me during the run. I feel a little lost with knowing what, when and how much to consume.

The three disciplines of triathlon are steeped in rhythm. Think of watching a well-trained swimmer, gliding smoothly down the lane, arms moving like clockwork, breathing every third stoke.
