Pre-race routine:

I didn't train particularly well for this race. I probably averaged around 20 mpw and mainly did two short mid week runs and a long run on the weekend.
Event warmup:

A very short slow jog right before the race started.

Comments:

Sometimes it's just your day. I wasn't really expecting to PR by over 2 minutes but here we are.

I came down with a bit of a head cold the Friday before this Sunday race so I figured I'd start with an 8:00 pace and see what happened. About 1/2 mile into the race a woman stopped and turned around after she dropped something and I crashed into her pretty hard. Luckily neither one of us got hurt and my race continued uneventfully. I felt a little tired around mile 3 so I popped my first caffeinated GU.

Yay for PEDs! As you can see after popping the GU I dropped a 7:49 and I started feeling really good. I took another around mile 8 1/2 and it was at the point I realized I was going to PR pretty easily. I ran it in and was super pumped to get in well under 1:45.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing! No idea how it could have gone any better!
Post race
Warm down:

Pounded some water, a banana, and some cookies while waiting on my buddy to finish.

Event comments:

A great local inexpensive half marathon. Yay ORRRC!

I just ran the Boston Marathon under nine minute miles, can I run eight minute miles for my half Ironman training runs? Or should I go slower?

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
