Spotsylvania, Virginia
United States
Maryland-Virginia Triathlon Series
65F / 18C
Overcast
Total Time = 5h 21m 21s
Overall Rank = 121/416
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 15/50
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 to drive 1 hour to race site at Lake Anna State Park.
Event warmup:

Very short dip in the lake. Warm up time was cut short for some reason.
Swim
  • 40m 8s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 05s / 100 meters
Comments:

This swim was not good. It took at least half of the swim to get my heart rate down. I could only go a few strokes and then needed to catch my breath.
What would you do differently?:

I can only assume that the problem was that this was my first open water swim of the year. I was doing fine last year, but the practice swims have all been canceled due to weather this spring. I've got to get into the open water more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

I'm specifically trying to improve transitions, so this went pretty well. I used a volunteer wetsuit stripper and got out of T1 fairly quickly.
What would you do differently?:

My heart rate was too high because of the poor swim. I needed to not run as fast to let it come down. A better swim would result in a better T1 time.
Bike
  • 2h 44m 50s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.38 mile/hr
Comments:

The hills on the course are fairly challenging, but not unexpected. Very little of Virginia is flat. I was hurting towards the end, so I think I'm a bit undertrained on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training with longer rides and hills.
Transition 2
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

Again, I'm working to speed up transitions. This one is a bit of an aberration because I had to use the porta-john. That probably added a minute to my time. Otherwise, I think this was pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

I have to use porta-john at this point or run would be worse.
Run
  • 1h 50m 34s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

My goal was a run split under 1:50. Unfortunately, the hills on the third lap kept me from that. I don't think the bike sapped my strength, I think it's simply the distance and the hills.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure, but I don't want to have to walk any of these miles. I walked the hills on the third lap.
Post race
Warm down:

My legs and hips were quite sore after the race. I think it was the hills. I got some Coke and pizza and relaxed for a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Open water swim problems, hills on the bike, and hills on the run.

Event comments:

This is a good race by MTS-VTS. I was hoping to break 5:20. I think if I really train well and get a flatter course, I may even have a 5 hour half in me. I need to work on open water swimming and try to figure out how to get faster on the bike.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
