My first Olympic race.
Event warmup:

Stayed in Moses Lake for the night, so just loaded up my bike and drove to the venue in the morning. Got in the water and swam a little bit. Put my face in it.
Swim
  • 42m 13s
  • 1760 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. I just took my time. Got into my rhythm right away and stayed there. No issues. I swam alone, way behind everyone else. Not my intent; just way slower than everyone else.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, except swim faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Transition. Had a bit of trouble with one sock, but overall a good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 34m 39s
  • 22 miles
  • 13.95 mile/hr
Comments:

Just too slow, but didn't want to burn myself out since this was my first Olympic triathlon.
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster.
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

Good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 35m 7s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 15m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Had to make a blue room stop before heading out on my run. The people at the 3.1 mile turnaround point had already left by the time I got there. I didn't know how far I was supposed to go (no route markings left), so I went too far :( I was really disappointed and out of water; I didn't know where I was supposed to go. Someone heard me crying and looked over the edge from the parking lot above and pointed to a spot behind me. I had gone too far. And no water.
What would you do differently?:

Ask that the race people stay until the last person has reached the turnaround and make sure someone is there to let them know and give them water.
Post race
Warm down:

Collected my medal and left. They'd already given everything out for the Olympic folks, so there was nothing left for me. I was pretty discouraged.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My body.

Event comments:

I was having a lot of fun and really happy, even though I was clearly in last place, until I found out they'd already removed the final water station and turnaround point before I even got there.

Congrats on your race.  Glad that you had fun and enjoyed the event.  I've done that race three times and really like the course.  That kind of sucks that the organizers didn't plan things a little better.  They usually do a pretty good job.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
