Cornelius, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
84F / 29C
Overcast
Total Time = 6h 30m
Overall Rank = 59/244
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 10/46
Pre-race routine:

The event was a whole hour earlier this year; so I was up way too early at 4:45 and out the door at 5:15 - parked at a friends house and rode into transition. Typical breakfast of oatmeal and Diet Mountain Dew,

I had down packet pickup the day before so it was a little easier. Dropped of my bag and bike, marked and chipped then off to set up transition.
Event warmup:

I have been nursing an injury (more later) so I was a little leery of my harder warm-up. Hip held up fine on my run warm-up. Hit the bathroom inside (little known secret) and managed a quick swim before the start.
Swim
  • 15m 46s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 06s / 100 meters
Comments:

I went wide left at the start versus tight right last year. Ended up swimming too wide the entire time. Much slower than last year and I knew it coming out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

I just went too wide - I felt ok but added something like extra 30 or 40 meters to the swim
Transition 1
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

Much faster than last year- I was relaxed and it was a smooth transition. 30 seconds faster than last year
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I was relaxed and composed
Bike
  • 50m 1s
  • 17.8 miles
  • 21.35 mile/hr
Comments:

This was over 40 seconds slower than last year which was weird - I was racing with a series of guys the entire time and it made it hard to not draft. Felt like I was riding hard. The course with the corners is not a favorite at all.
What would you do differently?:

Break away from the pack -
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Missed my rack!!! but it was still faster than last year by 17 seconds
What would you do differently?:

Tie a baloon to my spot - the transition spots were just not well marked and I struggled with my spot location the entire race
Run
  • 25m 13s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 02s  min/km
Comments:

Wow 30 seconds faster than last year
What would you do differently?:

Not much - surprised how slow the time was overall and surprised how much faster I was than last year
Post race
Warm down:

I grabbed some water and checked my results.Took off pretty soon as I knew I was not even close on my age group

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I had a major hip injury where I was in active physical therapy. I did not run at all except one sprint triathlon for two months and have just started very limited running.

Event comments:

The early start was a double edge sword - usually we have a ton of sun in our faces on the swim and the run is hot. We had a great weather and the heat was not there. The newer bike course is pretty technical. Race use to sell out but no more. Had more vendors in the past too.

Still it is local and right in my backyard (the majority of the bike course ride weekly )

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
