Pre-race routine:

Up at 5:15. Two cellphone alarms, and the room alarm, and NONE of them went off. Woken up by my coach knocking on the door asking if he could borrow some milk ( no really! ). Got up, had banana, clif bar, coffee, and trader joe's juice.

Packed up cars and headed to the race site.

We got lost AGAIN getting to the race site. WTF. :)

Got there eventually though.
Event warmup:

Not as much of a warmup as I'd have liked.

About 5' on the bike making sure everything shifted. Roads in the park were slick, so I didn't want to get too crazy.

Jammed my gel, and headed to the swim start about 20' before go-time. Got in a decent swim warmup.
Swim
  • 24m 36s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

Course was a bit long, considering times. It was also non-wetsuit legal, so that affected time a bit too. Considering all that, I'm happy with that time. According to a spectator shouting out positions, I was 15th out of the water.

Drafting was so-so. I hung with the lead packs until the first turn buoy ( about 600m or so ) then they pulled away. I was kinda in no-man's land without many drafting possibilities. I did the best I could though and found some feet to pull me into the finish after swimming solo for a bit. Felt touches on my feet the whole swim, so I had my own lamprey's this time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Good T1. A little run up the park to transition. Glasses on. Helmet on. Grabbed bike and gone!

It was very very humid, so glasses fogged up a bit. That was annoying, but didn't slow me down.

21st fastest T1 of the day. :)
Bike
  • 1h 09m 5s

  • 21.58 mile/hr
Comments:

The part through the park was tough. It rained the night before, so all the roads were slick, wet blacktop. We were warned that crossing the yellow line would result in immediate DQ. So had to go slower through some of the turns to stay in control and "inside the lines". A few steep hills with turns at the bottom made things fun.

The rest of the course once we got out of the park was great. It was smooth surfaces, mostly dry, and mostly flat. I cranked pretty good on this part. Back into the park and I had to slow again a bit due to the conditions.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. Average watts were a little lower than I was hoping for.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

I missed my rack, which cost me a few seconds. I also put on socks, which slows me down a bit in T2, but without which I'd lose far more time on the run. I almost left without my gel flask and had to go back for that.
What would you do differently?:

A few dumb mistakes cost me some time here. T2 was nearly empty when I got back in, being in the first wave and all. I need to mark, my rack better so I can find it easier. I should put my gel flask in my pocket before coming into transition, so I don't have to grab that off the bike in transition.
Run
  • 45m 50s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

This run really hurt. A lot more than Three Rivers did. I think the hills at Indy were steeper, which makes 'em hurt more. I was uncomfortable for most of the run, and HR was about 5 beats higher than at Three River ( it was low to mid 160's ). Never really felt like I hit my stride. This run took a lot more mental effort than past races.
What would you do differently?:

Keep running and getting faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, drink gatorade, cheer for the rest of the Salt Creek Tri Club as they came across the line. Stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather. It was very wet on the bike, so that made things slower.

Another speedy race,  Chris!

Looks like the extra sleep in the morning didn't hurt you!   But that is the reason I never sleep well before races...I deathly fear oversleeping!

Great job.  Man, I'd loooove to be able to sleep like that the night before a race.

Glad your coach was in need of some milk...all those alarms not going off or you sleep very sound!

Nice race..wow you are speedy across the board!

Some interesting twists...wet roads and sounds like hard run but you pushed it  even when it hurt and did it!

Congrats on doing well!
