Pre-race routine:

Friday, packed up gear and headed out of town at about 1pm. Arrived at about 4pm and picked up packet, took Zoe to the beach, checked into hotel. Kevin and I went to Luigi's for dinner. It's a hole-in-the wall place in a strip mall that has awesome pizza. We opted for calzone and stramboli this visit.

Weather predicted to be in the 40s and mostly sunny with a 6mph NNE wind during the race. I packed capris, a long sleeved tee and a vest for the race.
Event warmup:

I got up at 6:30 to walk Zoe and eat breakfast. Then we hung around at the hotel until about 8:00 and Kevin dropped me off at the race start. Kevin and Zoe went back to the hotel and they met me at the finish.

After Kevin dropped me off, I ran a loop of about two miles through downtown Morehead City, the same loop that starts the race. After my warm up run and looked for a gear drop for the vest because despite the fact that it was 39 degrees, I was on the warm side. No gear drop. Oh well, with the wind over the intracoastal, I wouldn't exactly overheat. Port-o-pots, water, strides, line up for the start and...

Comments:

I lined up between the in the first third of the pack and tried to settle my pace once we got started. I was aiming for an 8:35 pace. I grabbed water at 3, 5.5, 6.76 and 8 and had a gel just before the water station at 6.75.

I was pleased that I held my pace over the bridge on both the out and the back. It was fun turning the corner into the finish area and seeing Kevin and Zoe there!

My Garmin had me crossing the finish line at 13 and change (but not enough change) so I handed my medal and water to Kevin and ran a little bit more because... Strava ;-)
What would you do differently?:

I was pleased with this as a shake out/training race. I was super tickled to take third in my age group.
Post race
Warm down:

Short run near the finish area, snacks, a cool down walk with Kevin and Zoe. Then we went to the post race shin dig where they had lunch type food and beer (they had snacks like M&Ms and Oreos right at the finish area). The beer was Goose Island so a bit of an upgrade there.

Event comments:

This is a nice event. I did this same event as my second ever half marathon in 2010.

The event was well supported, with plenty of volunteer and water stops. Afterward they had nice snacks. Oh, and the medal is nice too. It as about 40 degrees at the start of the event and 50 degrees at the end.

Nice job! Sounds and looks like you had a good race.

The first road trip for Zoe was a success too (?) - she's so adorable.

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?
