Tempe, Arizona
United States
105F / 41C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 40m 29s
Overall Rank = 429/509
Age Group = 33
Age Group Rank = 19/28
Pre-race routine:

Set alarm for 3:45am. Ate a banana and a whole wheat piece of pita bread with peanut butter on it. Got to the race a little after transition opened got body marked and set up my area.
Event warmup:

Did some minimal arm movements to get the blood flowing and brain working. I forget what they are referred to as but learned them at the open water swim clinic.
Swim
  • 43m 48s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Out of all the swim courses I have done I believe I was able to stay most on course with this one. Especially on the way out when I was blinded by the sun. Did get off course a bit on the way back but nothing to terrible. I drafted when I could and didn't take any feet to the face. I did get grabbed a couple times though
What would you do differently?:

Swim more in general I really think I can get closer to 35 minutes on this.
Transition 1
  • 03m 34s
Comments:

Smooth transition didn't forget anything
Bike
  • 1h 31m 56s
  • 25.08 miles
  • 16.37 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to finish the bike at around 1:45 so really happy with the results. I still think there is time I can shave off here with the proper training. I pushed hard but think I can push harder. For once I was not one of the last riders on the course
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

took my time to get what I need
What would you do differently?:

Would tuck my gel somewhere else ended up losing it on the run
Run
  • 1h 18m 32s
  • 6.11 miles
  • 12m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was warm! I took advantage of all the aid stations and kept a steady flow of ice in the sports bra which really helped keep my core temperature down. I think I did fairly well trying to run as much as possible considering I have walked the majority of this in the past.
What would you do differently?:

train more bricks. I know I can get the run done faster than this
Post race
Event comments:

This was a very well organized and ran race.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

A powerful attraction of the calories in/calories out paradigm is its apparent simplicity. Unfortunately, the human body isn’t so simple and that is why this seemingly wonderful formula doesn't work.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.
