Been a decent week so far, my new Hokas are breaking in nicely, was worried how my legs were going to feel running in a more responsive shoe than I’m used to, but so far so good.

Getting used to the FR 235, it’s nice not to be running blindly anymore, however I’m having a hard time running slow enough for a Z2 easy run, I know that it’s a good indication of current fitness and will level out down the line. Is it recommended to use Garmins default HR zones or set custom ones? Does high altitude factor into those zones?

Brick this afternoon. It is gorgeous out today. I was really glad to be able be out. Followed up with shed painting...ugh...not as fun, but at least it wasnt too hot.

Definitely set your own hr zones. Garmin's zones are funky. There is an article here on bt about how to establish your zones. The test SUCKS, but worth it if you want to train by hr.

Alright I’ll look around for it. I did make a change to the settings today to monitor continuously and not on the “smart” setting, seemed to give me a steadier and actually lower HR reading. Tuesday’s run kept peaking into Z5-6 randomly, while today stayed fairly consistent at about z3.5.

Strength training this morning. This evening, if it doesn't storm (30% chance), I'll be going out for an OWS with the swim team. It is awesome to have 1.) someone with a boat and 2.) half a dozen people competing in an 5K ows race two weeks before my HIM! We don't have to swim from the gross boat dock and automatic training partners!!

Had a really awesome swim this morning. 800 warmup, 4 broken 200s (50, 10 seconds rest, 100, 15 seconds rest, 50, then rested about 45 seconds) followed by 8 75s of IM alternating strokes (fly-back-breast, back-breast-free, breast-free-fly, etc) on 1:30. They did a kick set after I left too but I was totally destroyed after that stuff.

Also, I figured something pretty exciting out the other day, albeit unrelated to SBR. As some of you know, I am going back to school to be a dietitian. I thought I had to get a 2nd bachelors, but it turns out I can go straight into my masters degree. Yay! It's only 4 months longer than the 2nd bachelors, and I was thinking I was going to have to go get my masters eventually anyway. Such a relief!

Went for a run this morning. My hip, glute and hamstring on the right side were tight so I stopped after 2 miles and went to foam roll. I think my body wants a rest day but probably won't get it until Sunday.

Had to miss my long run this morning. Working 12 hour shifts at night, and because the army doesn’t believe in sleep, I’m running on about 6-8 hours of sleep in the past 72. Guess I will have to pick back up on Sunday as planned.

Wow - I go away for few days and over two pages and some new people.  Welcome!

Got in some hiking down in Cancun in between the raindrops...no matter, still had a good time and hit my beer goal. 

Heading back to the airport for work on Monday, but am staying at my normal hotel so I can get some decent work in.  Hope you all are having a good weekend - the sun is actually shining here.

Don't worry, this happens to EVERY adult-onset swimmer.  Some suggestions:

  • as noted above, play around with your stroke count to get a feel for breathing less/more/left/right - it'll help you get rid of that "panic breath"
  • I breathe every four strokes, on my right side, except I'll breathe every two once in a while when I'm fatiguing...most people can't get away with every four but I have really big lung capacity
  • start doing 50s with 5-8 seconds' rest, then some 100s with 10s rest, etc.  You don't need to swim non-stop, it results in your stroke mechanics breaking down and it's boring as hell to swim non-stop, so break it up into manageable chunks
  • swimming is something like 75% technique, 25% fitness, and that fitness is very specific to swimming as you use your upper body
  • do kick sets, lots of them - I hate them (I'm a locked-ankle, leg dragger so it's really hard for me)
  • practice moving in the water at different speeds...just fast enough to not sink all the way to all-out
  • mix in some back or breast stroke, or fly if you know how (I don't )
  • swim more often, even if it's just for a few hundred yards, there is a lot of muscle memory involved and being in the water more makes you more comfortable there

Long run this morning. It felt good for the first 1:10. Then I stopped at the house to drop off he dog and refill on water. I drank about 15oz of water at the house and the remaining 35’ was a horrible slog fest of trying not to barf. I ended up walking he last mile in an effort not to puke. Good news is that even at a walk, I beat my “worse case scenario” race pace for October.

2600m swim this morning. Probably the last one this week as I'm headed out of town tomorrow morning. It will be a tricky week to get in my workouts, as I'll be watching three kids who can't be left alone. Guess I'm about to learn how single parent triathletes do it!

Does moving furniture count as a workout?! haha helped my roommate move out on Saturday. Spent a lot of time cleaning and relaxing and enjoying the quiet of my house this weekend. Getting back into a groove this week.

Oh also went to this place called Urban Axes Friday night for my friend's birthday. It was so fun! Highly recommended if you have one near you (I guess it's a chain type thing).

I'd like to think that it does! This weekend I spent a couple days cleaning out part of my spare bedroom / office and managed to generate multiple bags of trash and papers to shred. Sunday I went for a good 6 mile trail run with a short bike ride to/from the trailhead. Ramping up for a trail half-marathon at the end of the month so I need to get my running back in gear. Fortunately my weekends leading up are mostly open so I should be able to get some good runs in beforehand.

I just signed up for a sprint tri in two weeks!!!! I was lamenting the fact that my race schedule this year is quite light with only two races (Sept and Oct) when a friend mentioned a random pool sprint tri in a couple of weeks. This race is normally held in May, so I've never done it because of travel, but now I'm excited to have it on the calendar!

Missed yesterday’s interval run, so I did it this morning, was still feeling strong after the intervals so I decided to roll into today’s easy run to stretch it out. About 6
miles total. Knees are a little sore from some rough lines I decided to take but I’m feeling good overall. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be a rest day, going to hit the weights.

Had volleyball last night and swam 2650 yds this morning. Swim was pretty awesome. I might do a mini indoor tri this weekend that includes rowing, swimming and running (no biking!!!). Have to decide by tomorrow assuming there area still going to be some spots. Not quite certain what to wear for something like this though.

Amazing long run this morning. I’m not positive of the distance, because my watch does at about 5.25mi, but it was around 7 miles. The first five were all done at just under race goal pace. I run intervals to try to keep my foot happy, so once my watch dies I was running the distance between two electric poles and walking one. You’ll kinda go batty watching those poles go by!

I’m thinking about taking my niece and nephews for a swim this afternoon (if they want to go). I’ll probably swim for about 30’ and then play with them for a while. This will be the pool at my mom’s gym, which nearly always makes me a little queasy when I swim there because they don’t have any gutters along the sides to baffle the waves. I get seasick pretty easily.

Swim this morning, got in 2200 yds. I've decided not to do the tri on Sunday, but will get in two workouts Saturday (assuming I make it to swim practice in the morning).
