Late trainer session this evening. 4 x 5 minute big gear, low cadence intervals with 3 minute rest between sets.

My rear derailleur cable snapped when I shifted into an easier gear for my cool down. Shifted into my front ring and spun for a few minutes. Got off and inspected the cable and it was corroded where it snapped. I guess my bike thong hasn’t been doing a good enough job of keeping sweat from running down there. Just an FYI for those of you who spin a lot on the trainer. Luckily, this didn’t happen a month ago during my 70.3 race!

Looks like I will be ordering a new shifter cable set and probably brake cable set while I’m at it.

Happy training, folks!

I ended up getting pretty much everything replaced on my old bike over time, due to sweat corrosion from training in Vietnam. (Where it would be in the mid 70's even with AC going full blast, because it was so hot outside, and up to triple digits when I did occasionally take it out. Plus no dehumidifier on the AC.) Did end up with a loose shifter cable at IM Malaysia (giving me some non-functional gears) but that was probably just collateral damage from shipping the bike, or maybe getting tangled with someone else's bike during a windstorm the night before.

Anyway, 45 minute run and 1800 yard swim here. The run was nice as I have given up on the Hokas (Clifton 5--long story. Got them last summer on sale and keep trying to break them in for running, but my body just hates them. Great walking shoes, though) and gone back to Saucony Kinvara, my old standby. Not for everyone but they just seem to work with my feet and stride. Swim was awful as heater was broken and water was really cold. In my current state with 1 1/2 functioning arms, I just can't work hard enough on the swim to stay warm!

I picked up a pair of the kinvara 9 on sale for $50. I’ve put around 50 miles on them but can’t get into a groove with them. I keep going back to the Nike Epic React and Saucony Freedom ISO. I’ve never tried the Hokas, I think USAT would revoke my membership if they knew that.

I was planing on a sunrise bike ride this morning but didn’t pack any long sleeves or tights and the forecast where I was at in Wyoming was for a 35 dregs temperature at sunrise. So I delayed plans for two hours for things to warm up before my 18 mile ride. Then we drove to Idaho where I got in a 1000 yard OWS in a lake. I froze in that water. I didn’t bring the wet suit on vacation and the water was in the 60’s. Oklahoma has made me soft. ??

Lucky you--the Kinvara 9's are my favorite but couldn't find a pair in my size ANYWHERE, even online, except from some overseas companies with higher shipping costs. But the 10 seem just as good. Saucony Freedom is good too but hard to find here.

Note to BlueBoy--Idaho lakes have been cold! Last time I checked our local swimming hole, water was in the 50's, and not the high 50's, either. We had 30's at night as recently as last week. It can still get down into the 40's pretty regular in summer. Subtract at least 10 degrees from that if up at altitude.

I didn’t have a thermometer but the water didn’t sting when I got in so we weren’t in the 50’s. I am guessing mid 60’s for the water temperature. I didn’t turn blue and actual have a really nice swim but after about 25 minutes I started to get the ice cream brain freeze. It wasn’t to bad in the water, but when I got out I was wet and it was 65 dregs with a breeze and that was when I really froze. In Oklahoma water temperature is usual out of the 50’s by March and hit 80’s in July and August.
