Subject: can you recommend a good bike trainer??
Sadly, the days are getting shorter and so are my weekday rides. I'm going to invest in a trainer for my bike. I want a good one that is as close to road resistance as possible and that i can grow into. (not interested in rollers at this time)

Can anyone recommend one that is easy to get my bike in and out of?

Thanks!

I use a CycleOps Fluid Trainer I bought used for $100 and it is awesome. Easy to set up/tear down, and great feel. One caveat: Lay newspaper down under your chain or you'll get grease on the carpet.

CycleOps and Kurt Kinetic are the two most widely recommended fluid trainers.  Relatively quiet and provide progressive resistance--gets harder as you go faster.  Both are easy to get your bike in and out of, though you may have to swap your skewer to provide a better fit for the "cup" mechanism they use.

I've got a CycleOps but regardless of the brand I'd suggest a fluid trainer over a mag/wind trainer.  If you're REALLY looking for an investment then pick up a CompuTrainer

CarenM,
By the way that is a cool way to spell your name. Kudos to your parents. As for trainers, I would recommend CycleOps also. Here is an interesting review that you may find useful.

Thanks, Caren, for beating me to the punch with this question.

And, thanks, everyone for the recommendations.

One question, though. Is it true that carbon fiber frames should never be placed on a trainer? I think that's what I've read elsewhere.

Thanks all for the feedback.  I've been looking into this cyclOps, but its not cheap!  I'm also now concerned as I have a carbon fiber frame.

Thanks for the compliment on the name...but I was actually born with a K (musta hurt), and changed it to a "C" in grade 9 typing....long story

I had not heard that about carbon bikes. I would like any information on that because I recently bought a fully carbon bike and would not like to damage it.

Caren, let us know what kind of trainer you get. I actually have a cheap one that works fine on my steel bike. I guess I need to do a little research before putting my carbon bike on it.

BTW, your typing story makes the name even more interesting. Tell us sometime when you get the chance.

I don't know where this info comes from on carbon frames.  If it were unsafe using it on the trainer, I REALLY wouldn't want to ride it outside!  Use it on the trainer.  It will be fine.

JohnnyK, that is my thought too. I am going to do a little research just the same. I am kind of anal like that and research anything that is not obvious. It drives my family and close friends nuts, but it makes them a little more cautious about telling me things that may be urban legends.

Check out this link for a thorough review of a high-end fluid trainer. I just called the shop, and they have them in stock for $329 (which is a little high I think).

Nice topic, a Friend says I should get a trainer too.

Keep checking out the Internet sites like www.performancebike.com, www.nashbar.com, TriSports, etc as I'm always getting 10-20% off, closeouts and free shipping offers.

I purchased a cycle ops trainer and I am very happy with it. Everyone said to get the fluid trainer and not the mag. At the time I really didin't have the extra $ to step up to the fluid trainer, and then I found the mag on sale for about $35 of the reg price. I am not dissapointed with the mag. I believe it's a very good value

Here is a mag trainer that RocketMan just purchased for $189. He is a Tri coach and a pretty sharp guy.

Thanks for all the feedback guys!  I looked at that trainer in performance.... my hesitation was the in/out manouvering... I hear its a pain is the .

Not that interesting a story... I just thought it looked better in type print, so kept using it, but the teacher wouldn't cut me some slack on the "error" factor even though I insisted it was intentional.  Anyway, the name stuck...although I think Mrs. Ricci is in a mental institution now.  She was not exactly stable....

BTW....I just reread my first line...that could be taken in a whole different context lol...

I have just bought a second hand trainer (Kinetic) and was told that it is best to buy a separate steel skewer to use in the back wheel for less stress. Other than that I was told it is no problem with a carbon bike.

The CycleOps Fluid 2 isn't cheap but you kind of get what you pay for.  I bought mine from eBay for $200 and it was well worth the investment.

I have the Nashbar adjustable fluid. It's been fine for the work I've done so far, (Though I've never really used the adjustable resistance feature, just switch gears and resist increases plenty for my). I got it on sale for ~$140 a while back.

this is actually a great question and it spurred me to do some research.  The Kurt Kinetic appears to be significantly superior to all the trainers in the $200-$400 range.  I found one on ebay if you're interested:
