Subject: 1st Ironman on 2021
Hi all,
I'm new in the Forum and I'm writing from Europe. I had planned my 1st Ironman race this year in Australia in June but "of course" it has been postponed/cancelled. I think I'll be not able to go there for the postponed date and right now here (in Germany) pools, fitness studios a lot of more things are closed. Even it's no recommended to stay outside... Therefore the only think I can do right now, it's indoor training on my bike and maybe going back to a run and long biking sessions in 2 weeks.

Because from July onward I'm going to participate in cycling races only, In the meantime I'm starting to re-plan the season for 2021 and I'm not sure if plan again my 1st Ironman in Cairns in 2021 June, or maybe better Ironman Florida in Dec. 2021?
I chose Cairns for the nature and landscapes but when I started planning the trip I discovered there is not much else to do there...
Maybe Ironman Florida could be an event more crowded and "louder". I would like my 1st Ironman to be something can literaly push you up, atmosphere, organizations and everything related to.

Suggestions? Any other Ironman event that could be even more beautiful/memorable as 1st event? It has to be not to easiest one, just the most involving. Personal thoughts super welcomed :-)

Late June 2021 Ironman 140.6 is coming back to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho (we've been doing 70.3s for the last five years). They did a full IM for 15 years before that. Coeur d'Alene is a beautiful town and is always top rated for fan and volunteer support. If you can stay in the area post-race, Glacier National Park is a 4 hour drive and Yellowstone National Park is about a 7 hour drive. Plus plenty to do with the many lakes within 1 hour drive of Coeur d'Alene (in addition to Lake Coeur d'Alene). Check it out!

Ironman France in Nice is probably my favorite thing I've ever done. Not favorite Ironman, favorite thing. Really great bike course. That said, it looks like you are aiming for a dramatic change of scene from Germany since you mentioned Australia, Florida etc so Nice may be too close to home. If so, that's completely understandable, but I recommend doing it sometime. If you do go then plan to stay for a couple days there and one day ride the coastal road to Monaco. Fantastic.

Can I just say...there is plenty to do in Cairns. I’m from Melbourne but my brother lives there. It’s beautiful. Exploring the rainforests, Great Barrier Reef tours....and more. I love it there. And he race in Cairns is beautiful also. It’s on my bucket list.

Ironman Florida is in a smallish beach town in Florida so there isn't much to do there either. I love Ironman Florida don't get me wrong.

If you want Epic courses these are the ones that come to mind for me: France (Nice), Lanzarote, Ironman St. George, Canada (Penticton), Wales and Ireland.

I did Ironman France for my first Ironman. It is still the most beautiful bike ride I've ever done. Truly stunning.

If you're looking for a late season/fall triathlon you might consider Ironman Arizona. The course itself is nothing spectacular but the race itself is high energy. What I liked about AZ was activities before and after. We went to the Grand Canyon, took a train there. That's was some good scenery. Then we drove to Sedona and took an off-road Jeep tour. More awesome scenery.

I really like Ironman Louisville, the bike course was more challenging than what you'd encounter at Louisville or Florida but that finish line/after party was spectacular. I haven't done Florida yet but bike course is as flat as can be. It will still be challenging for some as you're constantly pedaling due to the lack of downhill where you can coast. Some say if you go too hard, it can end up being harder than what you expected.

Ironman Arizona is typically in October
Ironman Louisville is also typically in October
Ironman Florida is typically in November (I'm signed up for this year)

I've heard great things about St. George and also Coeur d'Alene. Both have some hills on the course. I was signed up for St. George but had to tranfser due to medical reasons (Before COVID-19 moved the date).

Felt like a rock star crossing that finish line. People thumping on banners and thousands cheering for every single finisher echoing around the place.

Makes up for having to turn away from it and go 'round for another loop.

I've done IMFL a couple of times the last few years and I'll add that despite making a real effort to manage the effort on that flat bike course, the humidity cooked me in short order once I started the run. I still plan to go again..
