Run
Comments: My first ever 100km race and it was over trails and had 4,600m climbing. It just worked and I got it done! :) It was a surprisingly quiet race mentally - even the last 5 hours in the dark on rough trails. Hard to describe the almost 'Zen - like' feeling. I never considered how far I'd run nor how far left to run. The only thing to think about was where I was and what my body felt like. And perhaps not surprisingly, I was just waiting for the wheels to fall off late in the race. But that never happened. My initial target when I signed up in January was 21 hours, but by May I felt I could set a real challenging target of 19:30 hours. So imagine my surprise when I finished in 17:41! What would you do differently?: Had a little trouble with the support crew getting lost heading to the important 53km CP. Eventually they arrived but it cost me 20 minutes and meant I had cooled down and felt quite sick heading out to the biggest climb on the course. This was the last daylight CP and was scheduled to be a major stop - new socks, shirt, shorts, restocking of personal fuel. None of that happened except the re-fuelling. Need to ensure crew are in place at the nominated points. Post race
Warm down: Beer! What limited your ability to perform faster: Cautious approach to pace as it was my first 100km race. Appropriate caution but can slip that shackle next race. Event comments: Outstanding race given the challenges thrown up by COVID. And to the great credit of the organisers, they gave people the option of a FULL refund or a transfer to November's race. (This was originally scheduled for July , our winter). Last updated: 2019-12-30 12:00 AM
