Precipitation
Total Time = 5h 40m 26s
Overall Rank = 238/1764
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 24/177
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at Dad's house, ate my oatmeal and banana with PB and drove to the race site
Event warmup:

had to park 2 miles away due to mud/flooding. That was the warmup.
Swim
  • 38m 43s
  • 2000 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Was hoping to swwim 34 min. A bi disapponted with my time. Kept a steady effort, but didn't push too hard, and felt pretty good the whole way. Navigation was OK, not great, but I've done worse.

Transition 1

Comments:

Had almost 1/3 mile run to T1 from the water, and the TZ was HUGE. Actual time spent at my site was minimal, but just a lot of distance to cover

Bike
  • 2h 51m 27s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Poured rain the entire time. Not a fun ride. No big hills, stayed in the large chainring the whole way. Lots of turns, though, and it was tough with it being so wet. Started eating 15 min into th eride, with half Clif bar at 15, 45 min, 1/2 PB&J at 1:15, half Clif bar at 1:45, 2:15, and another half PB&J about 2:45. Drank 3 bottles of water and 1 gatorade. Felt like I did very well with nutrition. IF ended up at 0.796, and my goal was 0.8, so pretty pleased with how I paced it out. Was tired by the end, but felt like I had a lot in the tank when I got off for the run, too.

Transition 2
  • 02m 46s
Comments:

T2 went well. Again, just a huge TZ and it was a total mudpit
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 02m 18s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Run went pretty well, although was hoping for sub 2hr. Took a gel every 2 miles with water, and gatorade at the odd miles. Felt good for the first lap. Second lap I was starting to tire, but managed to be only 5 min slower for the second lap. Again, was ready to be done, but could've kept going at a slow pace. There was a steady rain the whole way which helped to cool it off.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

None, no food, or anything else. Grabbed my bike, rode it back the 2 miles to the car, and sped home

What limited your ability to perform faster:

rain was tough on the bike. My swim was below average, but I felt like I put in a good effort. Rain made the bike tough, but I kept it pretty steady, and my pacing and nutrition were right on. I managed the runOK, not great, but much better than other races. I did have to stop and pee twice on teh bike and once on the run. Not sure exactly why, as my breakfast was the same as usual, had Thai food at dinner the nigh before which isn't unusual, and didn't feel like I drank more than normal in the 48 hrs leading up to the race.

Event comments:

Logistics were good. The weather was the problem. The parking area was flooded, so there was a huge backup to get to the race site. I had to park 2 miles away. Start was delayed by 30 min becuase so many people were stuck trying to park. The TZ was a total mudpit, people were slipping and falling all over the place. Otherwise, the course was nice, plenty of food/drink stations, lots of volunteers. I couldn't stick around for any post-race activities, so I can't rate them, but I'd expect them to be great, considering it was put on by Ironman Corp. Glad I did this race, not sure that I'll do it again.

I heard it was pretty wet..looks like a highly commendable job muscling through on your part. Well done.

I have never done more than a few morsels of solid nutrition in a half..I might give that a try.
