ironman.com has a news bit on the front page announcing Ironman Louisville 2007 (and 08-11) ...

I had heard talk of New Orleans hosting an IM. I guess this means they bailed on us in favor of KY? Anybody know?

Think I may make this my first IM!

Anyone familiar with the area out there that can give suggestions on good locations for hotels. I know we can't register for the event until 10/21 but its never too early to try to find an inexpensive hotel (if they exist). I'd prefer something that is fairly close to the race sight (not sure if anyone really knows where that is yet) and in a decent area. I don't need anything fancy...but something where the wife and kids won't be grossed out.

There were rumors pre-Katrina, but consensus was that it would be one of WTC's 70.3 events, not the full Ironman. Still may come to pass, it was Bill Burke, the RD for the Mardi Gras Marathon, I believe, that was spearheading the effort.

Stay away from the east end. Or maybe it's the west end..... I can't remember which areas are the real bad ones.... I'm pretty sure north-west area is rough, East area is pretty nice.

Louisville is not hilly. Go up to IN a little bit, and you'll find a few mounds but thats about it.

Stole this from somewhere else:

For those looking for hotels, the Galt House is right on the waterfront where the start will be, and also the t-area. The historic Brown Hotel and Seelbach Hotel will be closest to the finish line (which is about 3 or 4 blocks from the waterfront) and there is a new Marriott downtown, as well as a Marriott suites. There are several other unique hotels, smaller and probably more pricey. Although there is another bridge into So IN, I would hesitate staying in over there because it looks like the one bridge will be closed for the marathon.

 

Also, it's interesting that this is a WTC race.  Not IMNA.  Apparently, this was originally supposed to be a 70.3 but WTC liked the location and saw a need for another IM.  But it will be run by a different group than the other US IMs (WTC does run Kona).

I live in Louisville, but I really have very little experience with the hotels.  If they give more details on the starting area, I could probably help out with identifing a few areas to focus on.  This is a huge generalization, but most of the newer growth in the metro area is in the eastern part of the county, so hotels in that part of town should be relatively new and decent.  Plus, there really aren't too many places in town you can't reach in a 20-30 minute drive on the high end.  Feel free to send me a PM if you have any specific questions.

You don't have to worry about staying away from the West end (there is no North end, it's the river followed by the state of Indiana) because there are no hotels in the west end for a very good reason. Any hotel downtown is going to be fine because they are either well established, or brand new.

The race will probably go down river road which is a nice and flat for about 10 miles leading out to Lagrange, but the Louisville area/Jefferson County has plenty of regular size hills and rollers. I drove the bike course for IMWI and found it really nothing more then what I train on here in the Southern Indiana/Louisville Area. But no, it won't be "flat".
