Pre-race routine:

I had a terrible night sleep - Christopher puked all over my bed and then barely slept all night. I woke up at 4:45 before my alarm went off. I was afraid if I went back to sleep I might sleep through the alarm so I got up early. I had prepared everything so well the night before it only took me a few minutes to get ready so I was very early. I decided to just go - if I waited in the house I risked Christopher waking up and I'd end up back in bed trying to get him to sleep again!

Driving up to the race I ate about 1/2 of a bueberry muffin and drank some water. I got to the race in the pitch black - about 5:45. It was nice though - there was almost a full moon and tons of stars. We don't see the stars as much down where I live so it's so nice to see them up in the horse country.

I had over an hour to kill so I mostly sat in my car and read People magazine, ate some sport beans, etc.. Once people started to show up I got out and found someone from my TNT team. She introduced me to some people from the Palm Beach team and then it was time to start.
Event warmup:

None - this run was planned as a training run so I knew I'd be going so slow that I wouldn't need a warm up.

Comments:

This was the most fun race I've had. I think it was because I really kept telling myself it was a training run and not a race. Up until the rcae I hadn't done 10 miles yet so I wasn't even sure I would make it! Meeting the other TNT group made a huge difference because I ended meeting a running partner. Katheleen and I both said we were really slow so I told her I'd stay with her for a while. She did 8 min. run, 2 min. walk, but we just did a little leapfrog and were able to stay togteher.

The first 2 or 3 miles of the race were through the Aero Club - a community where the houses back up to a little runway and they all have airplane garages. That was fun to see SUV's parked next to airplanes and planes in people's backyards. John Travolta has a house here. The onyl problem was that I had to pee the whole time! Finally, Kathleen and I were the last runners (that we could see) so I hid in someone's bushes and peed. :O

The next section of the race was an out and back through a horse neighborhood. We have a friend who lives up there but his house was a little past the turn around. As we were running out and the fast racers were already on there way back I saw a truck waiting to get around a big group of faster runners. I told them they had a car behind them and as they moved over I saw it was my friend! He had driven down to say hi to me. :)

By this time I was still feeling great. My new friend had started to get a sore back though and she had to start walking more. I reallty wanted to finish with her but I was going at such a smooth pace I couldn't stop to walk now. I was afraid I'd never start running again. So the last two miles I did on my own and I was able to speed up a little and I passed four people!

The last 1/4 mile the other TNT coach came out to meet me and cheer me on. I was happy to finish just over 2 hours. The best part was I felt great and knowing I could have gone a little bit faster. I'm glad I stayed with Kathleen though - it's so much more fun to run with someone than run alone! (If you can't tell, I love to talk)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - I had a great run and did exactly what I needed to do to prepare for my 1/2 mary.
Post race
Warm down:

Just general walking around, talked to some more TNT people, cheered for Kathleen as she finished just a few minutes behind me.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't train enough

Event comments:

I only say not enough water stations because I like a ton of water - that's why I wore my fuel belt. There were tons of volunteers

Great race Amy!! Its always fun to meet people at a race, you already know you have something in common. Can't wait to see you at Disney. I'm slow and love to talk while running too. Again great work, I have some catching up to do.

WOW!  Pretty brave to toe the line at a race where you hadn't even completed that distance yet.  Great job.  Sorry I didn't get to meet you there.  It WAS a beautiful race, wasn't it!

Did you pee in John Travolta's bushes?

Great job, especially after the poor sleep and everything else.

nice job! getting puked on the night before a race - something only the college students and moms can relate to, eh? i had ella throw up in the car on the way to a race once. i almost didn't go to the race, but bill said 'GO! do the race, i can handle this.' anyway, good job.

Great job girl!!  Way to go out there and get it done...and it sounds like you had some gas left in your tank-enough to get you through 3.1 more miles!  and less pressure=more fun.

I don't know - wouldn't that be funny?  I think it was the house right after the one that had the old war plane in the backyard.  I kept thinking I heard a car coming, it was stressful!

awesome! There should totally be a categorie for Moms at races, that way the getting puked on wouldn't be much of a handicap- your competition would have endured the same nonsense!

Glad you got to hang with TNTers, too, that makes it fun.

a 10-miler! Good for you! I have my eye on a 10-miler too. Children puking, peeing in John Travolta's yard, etc etc. You live a full life!
