Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:30. Tried to eat breakfast before I got too nervous to eat. Had oatmeal and a bit of coffee followed by a banana. I needed a bagel but we had none. This would be my downfall today.
Event warmup:

Got a call from Polly on the cell as we were driving through Hartford enroute to parking garage. No way I'm gonna find her as there are like a million people in the city of Hartford today. Dave and Ian decided to take on the 5k so they were off to the civic center to get registered so I was on my own til it was time to "go". Stood in the short portopotty line for looooonng time. It was very cold before and at race start. Keeping warm was a challenge. I jogged lightly from portolets to race start and all around the venue trying to find some one I knew. No luck—couldnt find anyone. The crowd was great, but it was getting on my nerves.

Comments:

Keeping cool was not an issue on this day as it was chilly at the start and any upward movement of the temp was welcome during the race.

I suspect that I should have drank more and even taken some Ultima or Gatorade on the course. I took water at about 5 of the stations.
What would you do differently?:

Eat more before the race. I really believe it is what kept me from reaching my goal today
Post race
Warm down:

I felt really bad at the finish line—like I might pass out. Dizzy and unable to walk in a straight line. Took a few minutes to feel normal and then just felt really all over sore and fatiqued.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enought food before hand. Maybe didnt eat well enough the night before either.

This is still a PB for me so I guess I can't be too disappointed. Its just that I know I had a sub 2 hour in me if it had been a better day. I ran this race last year in 2:23:something so I made huge improvement over a year's time.

Event comments:

I don't care what they say. I like the Hartford Marathon/Half Marathon. Its a great event.

Was able to maintain HR at about 154-156 for about the first 4-5 miles but it was all down hill from there. Not sure what the prob is but I have been struggling with HR all week and seem to find myself in Level 4 even when I don't feel like I am working that hard. I should have been able to maintain it better. At FIRM when I ran the 13.1—I had my HR completely under control for the almost the entire run. Go figure. Should have that murmur checked out maybe.
Course: The course is a good one. No real hills. Lots of crowd support this year.

I'm sorry you didn't meet your goal, but you still set a new PR and did very respectably, so no feeling bad!! This half was a good practice run for your first full marathon, and now you know what you need to do to stay properly fueled. Perhaps you should do the Mystic 10 miler next weekend as more practice?

Good job Pam!

nice race Pam.  A 2:01 is a most respectable time!  I've heard good things about Hartford, would you do it again?

Sorry you didn't meet your goal but that improvement over last year and a PB for a 1/2 mary is great!  Sounds like you've already figured out what may have conspired against you breaking 2h which means addressing these next time should make sub 2h a certainty.

Nice job Pam. I know it must be dissapointing but you knocked 22 minutes off your time from last year and that is HUGE. Plus I feel like the first mile running in the pack really slows you down. Glad we could meet up and good to see you!

Pam, you SMASHED your PR How awesome! But think about it, if you didn't hit the wall and STILL didn't make your sub 2, how you'd have felt.....you would have walked off of the course thinking that you didn't give it your all.

You definitely gave it your all and came so close!! 64 seconds is easy to fix, but I have a feeling you'll do much better than that on your next 1/2 mary race!

I'd join you next year for the full if you were doing it, but I'm scheduled for NYC 2007 a few weekends later....

You did great Pam.

If you were dizzy at the line then it was most lilely lack of calories (I am an expert in this unfortunately ).

Just think about next year when you have another 22m PR!!!!!
