Swim
Comments: Swam pretty well. This is my fastest 1000 meter time in a race so I can't complain at all... but I still need to get faster. I really give up a lot by falling behind in the swim and then pass many people on the bike. What would you do differently?: Dive out more quickly into the water... I watch the Folts brothers lunged out and I then went behind them... I should have lunged out too as what I did caused me to get sandwiched as a wide group of guys compacted together in the water. Transition 1
Comments: Had a little trouble getting on leg of my suit off and putting on one of my socks. I would attribute it some to the cold breeze blowing over my wetness. (does that sound right?) What would you do differently?: Flap that towel over my feet before trying to put the socks on. The rack was close to where the swim exit was so my feet were still very wet. Bike
Comments: Rode very well. Since my swim is not too speedy, I passed many people (I think about 70). About 2 miles into the bike I had to go over the double yellow line to get around a truck that was following another cyclist. I was going 28 and did not want to slow down. Stupid driver should have given room in the lane and passed all the cyclists. I then kept passing people like they were not moving. I really liked it when I blew by guys that had rear disc wheels (not good in cross winds) and guys who had aero helmets on. (from what I heard they are not good in with cross winds either). Only bumble on the bike was when I started climbing a hill that takes you up to Parker dam. When I shifted the chain fell off the big ring. I think I shifted both levers almost at the same time and that is what caused it. Stopped and put my chain on and then rode on and quickly caught the 2 guys that went by when I put my chain on. Also there were a few spots where the cross wind made it feel like I was being pushed all around. One big cross wind came while I was going 32mph. What would you do differently?: Good bike, just avoid shifting the way I did when the chain came off the big ring. Transition 2
Comments: Racked my bike with ease and quickly had my helmet off and shoes on. Ate a chocolate GU and took off on the run. What would you do differently?: Good transition. Run
Comments: Ran very well. Thought to myself that it would have been great if I felt this good when I started the run at SOMA I would have easily gone under 5 hours. Anyway... I passed a handful of guys and ran very well. I felt good the whole way and grinded out a good time. What would you do differently?: Not sure... ran well. Post race
Warm down: Gatorade and chit chat with some guys I see at races in Phoenix. Did of course get a Guinness after picking up my gear from transition! What limited your ability to perform faster: The wind! Event comments: This is a great race. I really liked the clear water and the one loop bike course. It is neat to know that when you pass someone, you are actually passing someone. I don't understand why so many people do races like the "Timex" race when there is such a gem of a race to do like this one. It was very scenic and was run very well. The course had some challenge to it, but was still a fast course (would have been fast at least if the wind wasn't there). Everyone seems to be nice at smaller races too. Really enjoyed this race! Feeling great after it too! Last updated: 2006-05-29 12:00 AM

Had the pasta dinner the night before at the Casino. Had a couple of Guinness later at the motel while watching the Klitschko heavyweight title boxing match. (7th round knockout)
Race morning - setup transition, ate a Snickers Marathon bar, and 1 hour before the race took Sportlegs. (found out about this stuff yesterday. It is a supplement that is supposed to help your body process lactic acid and "reduce the burn")
Swam a few strokes and then shivered for three or four minutes until the race started. It was around 55 degrees with a breeze blowing.
