I think we are going to reserve a room in South Bend.  It's about 20-25 minutes away.

What time is the bike check in for Steelhead? I registered a while back and never put any more thought into it. I live in Grand Rapids but figure I should probaly look into a hotel room here pretty soon.

You might want to start looking now.  I thought we already had it covered and didn't.  There are NO rooms to be found in St. JOe/Benton Harbor.  THere are rooms in Dowagiac, and South Bend.  I couldn't even find rooms in Stevensville but that couldbe because we are cheap!!!

Hey folks, don't forget looking north of Benton Harbor. South Haven, Saugatuck, Holland, and Grand Haven are all within an hours drive.

For the poster from GR, bike check-in is mandatory on Friday afternoon/evening. Check out www.steelheadtriathlon.com for details.

BAMBAM66 - 2007-05-07 2:58 PM I think we are going to reserve a room in South Bend.  It's about 20-25 minutes away.

I commute daily from NW side of South Bend to Benton Harbor for work.  It is 45 minutes, but an easy drive.

Also check hotels in Mishawaka (town next to South Bend).  Lots of choices there for rooms and restaurants.

I'm in, my training partner has a family Summer home on the lake.  Apparently we are less than a mile away.  I guess depending on the current, they change the swim start area.  We will be at the "other" swim start- I'm sure.  I probably shouldn't offer out space, being that it is not my place, but I'm positive- know this family- that if there were a triathlete in need- there would be a away.

So Dan, or whoever, you've got at least a couch/yard/driveway/ somewhere.....

stay in touch!

This will be my frist 1/2 as well.  I'm anxious because I know I will want to race this thing, but it must be used as a training day for IM WI that will be about a month later.

So Bill do you drive down on Friday check in your bike and then head back home to sleep and get up on Saturday and drive in, is that your plan? I am about 1:15 away and thought that might be the best plan for me.

Shermbelle,

Exactly. Planning on heading down after lunch on Friday to check in and soak up some of the atmosphere. Back to sleep in my own bed and then drive back down Saturday morning.

Where is home for you?

Also, don't forget about the Grand Haven Festival of Races (Sprint, Oly, and HIM) on 8 July as a tune-up!

Hey, are any of you Steelhead Slackers (look, I just named your team for you) going to respond in the SOR vs. Steelhead thread?  Let's get a little competition going here, people!

Ok.  Here's the deal.  I'm making a list in the goals section of my log of everyone for both races.  Hyperlinks included so you can just jump to any of your respective team mates or the opposition for inspires and trash talking.

Also, I know there are people registered for each race that have not jumped into the challenge.  If you get word to these people let them know if I should add them to the list.  If something has changed and someone should not be on the list let me know that too.

My logs.

Subject: Steelhead Bike Course Map

I mapped the Steelhead bike course today (good use of company time).

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/training/map.asp?routeid=18155

However, the elevation is jacked up.  I've tried reseting elevations to no avail.  I'll keep trying to fix it so this link stays valid.

I'm officially signed up!  I get to use it as a tune up race and hope not to get demolished.

Fixed the elevation issue.  Should be good now.

Subject: RE: 70.3 steelhead, Im in - New Run Course

Run course is new this year.  It goes North up through Whirlpool's HQ Campus (2X) vs. going South along the river.  A couple of good hills.  A plus is that there will be significantly more shade.

Here is the run course:

Interesting, thanks. Running up and down the overpasses made the run my least favorite part of the course last year. Does the new run route have any shade or elevation changes?

I ran the first and last 3.4 miles after work yesterday.  One good up hill (+10 bpm on the ticker at a 9min/mi pace) at the 1 mile mark.  Since it's a modified out-and-back, we'll have a good downhill at mile 12, otherwise pretty flat.  Some good stretches of shade, but lots of sun.  The Whirlpool campus (section I did not run) should have some nice shade.
