Pre-race routine:

Ate a bagel and toufutti for breakfast, then drove down to the race, arriving about 1 hour and 15 minutes before the start. After checking in and setting up my bike I walked down to the beach. After setting up my towel and running stuff (the run was before the bike), I went for a 10 minute job, and stretched, until the start of the race.
Event warmup:

10 minutes of light jogging, and streching, assisted by my coach (Ben).
Swim
  • 05m 15s
  • 350 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

I decided to go all out in this race, and really attack the swim. The water was shallow, and a lot of people walked a good part of the first leg of the swim, which was annoying. The first 50 yards was pretty crazy, with kicking and splashing, but by the first bouy I had pulled away from the big part of the group, and was within the top 5-10 coming out of the water. It was supposed to be a full quarter mile, but it was definitely short, as my fastest time for a 400 in a pool has been about 6:10, and there is no way I went that much faster in the lake.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. My arms started to feel heavy about half way through, probably because of the temperature, and sprinting. Maybe a warmup swim would have been a good idea to get my arms ready. Otherwise it went really well.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

My feet were all sandy, which took too long to clean off. Otherwise it was good.
Bike
  • 20m
  • 5.7 miles
  • 17.10 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was at the end of the race, and felt really good. I passed a lot of people, some of which I recognized as having passed me during the run, which felt really good! the hill at the end was rough, but i maintained my speed pretty well.
What would you do differently?:

More hill work, so I can fly up them like Lance!
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

adjust toe clips beforehand! I got on and started riding only to find that my clip was wrapped around the pedal, and I had to stop to fix it.
Run
  • 23m 30s
  • 2.6 miles
  • 09m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

I had gone all out in the swim, so I was tired going into the run, and also full of water! I kept burping throughout, and my stomach was pretty upset in general, so the run wasn't that great.
What would you do differently?:

train more. I could go much faster, but it is going to take some hard work.
Post race
Warm down:

walking for a few minutes, some streching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my own lack of training

Event comments:

A good race for a good cause.
