Yes, rest days are important. It's not about how many miles you did this week, but about how much time you put in compared to the previous week. Too much too soon and you're risking injury and/or burnout.

It's about building up slowly and safely. Before you know it you'll be wondering how you're going to fit it all in.

Okay then, Today is a rest day. I just feel like a wimp. People running 10 miles or biking 20 miles a day take rest days, but you and Tim are right I need to learn to rest as well.

Thanks gang,
Brian

ok, today i am going to map out a plan for my training routine. i have been been quite lazy in the past few weeks and it really shows. my energy is down, my sleeping sucks and i am a grouch. i didnt feel this way when i was exersizing on a irregular basis.

before i have just been winging it as far as a schedule. if i had the time i would run or ride or lift etc. so now is the time for me make a schedule and stick to it. it will take some creative thinking with my work schedule. because i work 12 hrs a day there is not much time once i get home.

lets see if i can explain this:
2 day shift 7:00am-7:00pm
24hrs off
2 night shift 7:00pm-7:00am
4 days off (1st day off try to sleep 4-5 hrs) any more and cant sleep that night

my week rotates also, say i start my workweek on a monday the following work week start on a tuesday then wednesday and so on.

with my four days off i ussually have quite a bit of time on my hands(not lately) but enough to get a good workout in each day. my problem is that i dont do anything on my work days (such as now) and when my days off come around i feel like im starting over.

so i have to come up with something such as a short work out after my dayshifts and before my first night. i am not goingto schedule anything between my two graveyard shifts as i am just too damn tired.

if any of you guys have any suggestion please let me hear them.

Rob

p.s. thanks you all for the inspiring messages

Stretching and warmup? My stretching consists of 2 min. after a run stretching hamstrings. My warm up consists of a 5 min walk before a run. The walk gets faster every minute for 5 min. Should I be doing a 15 min warmup? Or is it like rest days? Won't hurt so much now but later I will pay for it?

Thanks guys, More questions to follow

thanks guys for the support, it really helps. sorry i havent kept up or followed you guys like i should be doing. but things are going to change, they have to. its amazing how fast you can fall into a bad routine. took most everything i had just to get off my butt and start lifting but once i got going i felt better about myself. last week at the end of each day i remember thinking to myself i should have done this or that and was rather dissapionted myself. its crazy but after just two days of traaining i do feel better and i a bit proud and looking forward to tommorows workout. i was going to bike and swim but i think the local YMCA is closed so i guess ill ride and lift again. looking forward to improvement.

Wow..no posts to our thread in 10 days!!  How is everyone doing?  I started 20 week Oly plan (3x balanced) on Mon Jan 29 in anticipation of 1st "real" tri on June 17.  It's actually a Sprint, but thought I'd overtrain (in a good way) for it.  I'm still eyeing ending the year with HIM...but only local one is 2 weeks after Oly (Sept)...anybody else start training plans yet?

Tim
