Total Time = 31m 8s
Overall Rank = 50/1505
Age Group = M 35 - 39
Age Group Rank = 10/??
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6:00 .... got out of bed at 6:45 and rushed on the clothes, took the dog out, rushed out the house and drove to Baltimore to get my chip and race.
Event warmup:

Two mile warm up on the course, checked out the competition - there were a LOT of fasties there as it was the final race of a series and drew out the best local runners, stretched, drank a Vitamin Water and took a Gu.

Comments:

Really not much to comment on this time. I started near the front but not in the front row as there were definitely a lot faster people than me there, plus I was still getting over whatever cold it is that I have.

Gun goes off, I try to settle in a groove quickly and get out of the mess and get some clear running room. First mile clicks off at 5:59 and I'm feeling a little tired already. Tried to stay consistent as you continue with a slight uphill through mile 2 and 3. Mile 2 came at 6:07 and the tired feeling was stronger. 3 was at 6:18 or so.

The next mile wraps around the lake at Druid Hill Park and is basically flat but was windy and cold. I was definitely falling off and started to get passed by a lot more people here. Mile 4 came at 6:24 .... worst of the race. At 4 I knew that if I ran sub-6:40 I'd get my goal time of 31:30. Was getting passed by more people here, but pushed on.

Last 1/3 of a mile or so is downhill. Tried to not let anyone pass me and with a final push was able to get one spot back. Not a bad kick all things considering and I didn't sprint all out, so I had another gear or two if someone cam up on me (no one did).
What would you do differently?:

Not be sick, pace a little more consistently.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat down, took off chip and returned it, walked over to post-race area and got some soup, Gatorade and an orange. Waited for results but figured I was barely top 100, so took off before they came out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being sick, long season, marathon three weeks ago.

Event comments:

Great race to run, but not that great of a race for me in my eyes. I really think I underperformed in this one all things considered. Even though I beat last year's time by over 2-1/2 minutes, beat my goal time by over 20 seconds and set a new PR by about 30 seconds I really think I could have gone faster. I was surprised that I got 50th overall though. This was a really strong field, so that ain't bad.

A little over 6's isn't a bad result, regardless of time of year, Rick.  I won't pump you up for a result you didn't like, but there's natural variation due to stuff out of your control. I wouldn't sweat it.

So relax, grab that cocktail, and savor the season.  And come back with attitude next season.  Nice work!!!

I passed you as you were approaching Mile 3, going in the opposite direction, and you were still looking pretty strong.

Good race overall and a beautiful morning for a run.

That was a great race Rick!  Even if you could go faster under different circumstances, you beat your goal time, set the PR and finished top 50!

You may remember that little run you did a few weeks ago?  Might have had some impact on your performance today.

Hey, looks like a great race. (22 Seconds faster than goal is pretty nice)

A friend of mine is a firm believer in running one or more shorter distance races Post Marathon. After 42 Marathons, he is still turning PR's at shorter distances. (Strike while the iron is hot)

Surely your marathon recovery is complete at this point; Great effort out there.

Good On Ya

Hey Rick,

I think that was a great result considering you recently ran a marathon, moved into a new house and had a sick child.  There must have been some really fast people at this race.

Nice job Rick.  Nothing like setting a PR while still under the weather.  I wish I would have known there were some other BT'ers there as well.

So, the real question is... did you beat that 12 y/o kid who was right behind the collegiate guys   I almost tripped and fell when I saw him approaching the turn around.  Little guy was faaaaaaaasssssst...

The young kid got like 5th overall or something like that.

Gee, I wonder if he'll get a running scholarship when he gets older!

In my eyes, that is a smoking fast time.  Don't be too bummed out about your result.  It's late in the season and time to rest and relax and prepare for next season.
