Subject: Bike fitting question
I just got into the world of tri about 3 weeks ago and plan on my first race in 4 weeks. I can't afford a bike yet, but was able to borrow a friends old road bike so this one will have to do for now. I'm 6'2" w/ 34" inseam, and the bike is a 54cm frame. I'd like to be able to ride on it at least a few days per week on it for the next few months until I decide if I want to buy a new bike. Is there anything that I should do or can do to make it fit properly?

Second question, when/if I get a new bike, do you think a 54 cm road frame will fit a 5'6" female w/ 30.5" inseam? That way my girlfriend and I can start riding together. What are standard sizes for frames and a person's height or inseam?

There are no such thing as "standard sizes for frames and a person's height or inseam." Height and inseam are just two of a dozen or so measurements that go into bike fit. As I said in an earlier post, your height has as much to do with bike size as it has to do with shoe size.

IMHO that bike is way too small for you. As an example, I'm a little cramped on a 54 and I'm 5'9." You can put on a longer stem, move your seat back (and up) all the way, but you're liable to still be cramped. Keep in mind that a longer stem may effect the stability of the bike, especially on fast descents.

The bike is probably a better fit on GF than on you, but could be a little big for her as well.

I'm 5'6" and currently ride my sister in law's 54 cm road bike. It's a bit too big for me (I'll be getting a 52 when I buy a bike) - I really have to reach and pretty much can't ride in the drops. However, I think if I could switch to a slightly shorter stem, it would be OK - this bike is so old that I can't. Anyhow, point is, it would probably work for your GF but not be ideal. My hubby is 6'2" and rides this bike occasionally - it works for him, but is definitely too small. He looks like he's riding a mountain bike on it (upright posture)!!

Yeah, I can definitely tell the bike is way to small. I rode on it for the first time 2 days ago and felt a bit bunched up. I'm just trying to get by on it for the next few months until I can save up for a nice road bike. I'm looking to do whatever I can to make it work for now. Thanks for the input.

I had my BF measure me this weekend, so I could get some info about bike sizing and such as well. The above link is the place we used. Once you input your measurements, it will give you recommendations for sizing and such, which you can then use to modify your bike if you need to.

Good luck!! And welcome to the board!

With a 34" inseam, the 54cm bike is much too small and too cramped for you. You will do yourself more harm than good riding this machine. A Wal-Mart bike that fits is better than the best racing machine that does not!
