Pre-race routine:

My race last weekend taught me to eat and hydrate well beforehand, so I woke up at 5:00A (T-3h), ate breakfast(raisin bran), and drank water. At 6:00A, I ate an apple and drank more water. After this, I didn't add any additional food or water because I didn't want it sitting in my stomach for the race.

Was a little stressed because my borrowed bike's back tire was flat and I couldn't get air into it. I also didn't have the proper tools. It is a ZIPP tire with some type of disk material around the rim so the valve stem was hidden and inaccessible. I went to the race site earlier than usual because a local bike shop would be participating.

The bike shop helped me with the tire and got me race-ready about 15 minutes before start time.
Event warmup:

Not enough again! The delays with the tire kept me from really warming up like I had planned, but without a bike I'd be in more trouble! Ran up & down the road for about 8 minutes before getting ready for the start.

Comments:

Ran well and faster than ever had before! Didn't feel too fast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

After the tire work, the bike was in the smaller pedal ring and midways on the back ring. Got on the bike fine, but couldn't shift into the upper ring for about 2-3 minutes of working it up & down on front and back to find a place where it would let it go!
What would you do differently?:

Have the bike in the pedal gear I wanted to race in!
Bike
  • 48m 5s
  • 15 miles
  • 18.72 mile/hr
Comments:

This was my first road condition bike race, so I didn't really know what to expect. I felt that it went well and the race highlighted the need for me to work on bike conditioning. I've gotten my running in the 5K to 10K range much faster, but the bike's time/distances were harder on my legs than I had expected.
What would you do differently?:

Given the experience level, nothing. I will spend more prep time on the bike before the first tri!
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

I was using cages, so I didn't need to change shoes into and out of the bike.
Run
  • 16m 20s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Slow legs! Worked through it by the 1 mile mark and was able to pick up pace for the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Post race
Warm down:

Walkout and some stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience and bike conditioning

Congrats on a great race and awesome running! It is natural to felt you didn’t have your cycling legs but we've been focusing more on running. Trust me you have developed a solid run foundation and now you can work on polishing the speed by adding some intensity little by little and develop the cycling speed in the next coming months. Within 8-10 weeks you should be getting ready to have the total package!

Great 1st race of the season. Your times were really good. You learn something every race (I also had my bike in the wrong gear once, and the bike start was uphill!). Keep up the great training!

Let's the games begin!

You'll be chasing and passing those times easily in a few more months, but way to go on race numero uno....your first run splits were blazing!!  And then in T1 you did some time saving with the shoes, but a little lost on the gears...lessons learned and valuable race-experience gained.  There's always a next time.

I look forward to your next RR already.  Let's keep training, -Sunny

Nice race and good start to the season.  Biking, pacing, etc. will all be much easier in a couple of months.  Bricks will become your friend.

Keep up the good work.
