Subject: Clydes are taking over!

Just checked the participant list for this Sunday's Wildman OLY in Orlando.  There are as many Clydes registered as there are in my M 35-39 AG.  I wonder if I should just flip a coin for which division to race in.

I'm wondering if they are ever going to realize that 200lbs. is a pretty light cutoff for weight class divisions.  The CDC showed that the average weight of the American male is approximately 195lbs. for those aged 20-60.  Obviously, these are not all athletes, but still.  I find it analgous to having a height class where anyone 6'0" and up is considered in the "tall" division.  The average height of a male is 5'11" so 1 inch above average deserves a specail class?  Likewise, 5 lbs. above average derserves a special division?  Seems USAT still has their head up their arse with regards to weight divisions.

It's just good to see people participating.

BUT ..... just run a search on the forum to see the opinions on the validity/need to have a clydesdale/athena class to begin with.  It brings up differing but strong opinions.

I think the clydes class cutoff should be exactly 1 lb less than my raceday weight (which will always be over 200 lbs, currently 260).

Well, if the Wildman list in any indication of what's going on with our sport, then half of the guys racing are Clydes anyway, so we won't need a weight division.

I'm 6'1" 210, down from 250.   I felt I needed the Clyde category at 230+, but I am feeling kinda guilty at 210 because I am not fat anymore.   Still, I think running beats up a bigger guy - even at 210 - so maybe it is needed.

Also what is average weight for triathletes?   That seems more of an indicator of the clyde cutoff than average US population.    You have quite a few 400 pounders in the general population, whereas not many triathletes (I have seen anyway) are over 250.   If you race/train often it is going to be tough to stay in the upper 200s for long.   For a really fit person, over 200 is kinda "big".

Personally I don't care about divisions.  I am racing myself to see how fast I can go.  Sure I want to win my AG, but that really depends more on who else shows up than how much I train or weigh.

what about running? alot of those running division cylesdales start at 175 if they have multiple divisions

Only seen 2 races that have weight divisions greater 225 which are for 250+.

One was a 15k/4k and 1 is an oly tri.

then again how many people race over 250 other than me of course.

If they bumped it from 200 to 225 I be happy since I do not see myself ever getting below that.

I have also seen running races with different divisions.

Typically they are:

Clydesdale 195 - 214
Rhino 215 - 239
Hippo 240 +

Some races even have age groups within weight categores (Over/Under 40 typically).

This is how I see it: Who cares how many Clydes there are? Maybe with less AG'ers you'll have a better shot at podium?

Also, According to the National Center for Health Statistics, the average height for an adult male in the United States is:

  • 69.2 inches, or
  • 5 feet 9.2 inches
So, I'm not sure where you're getting your data from.

Clyde and Rhino sound tough, but Hippo?  Couldn't they make it something more manly than that?    Maybe Dinasours or Mammoths or something.

I agree, Hippo just sound mean. Why do women get Athena and we get large animal names. Why can't they use Greek gods names like Zeus, Apollo, etc.

Rhinos and Hippos??  Oh lordy.....  I've seen "Clydesdale +" and "Super Clydesdales,"  but never a race that felt the need to venture out into the African veldt to come up with names.....

There is a local race with Buffaloes and Super Buffaloes, but that's the Buffalo Run on Catalina Island where they in fact have buffalo.

I am 6'2" 240#, down from 274.  My "nemesis" is a guy I race against, he is 6'1" 201#, raced track in high school, can't swim for yellow bike but rides 22+mph and runs just over 6 minute miles.  Just ain't fair, I tell ya!    He's actually turned into a friend.

not sure why a "need/validity" for clydesdale/athena classification is EVEN and issue. Just like age, there are genetic limitations for someone bigger...so in order to compare apples to apples, they created this category...JUST as they do for age...

good news is you run accross some clydesdales that are anomolies and kick everyones arse! go clydesdales!!!!

I'm with you! At least make it a good code word -- like Athena or Clydesdale. Not just come out and say "hippo". Geeeez, why not just say huge fatty. We're all doing the best we can!

I've always been in favor of a division based on BMI, with those rated "Normal (BMI<25) in one division,  "Overweight" (2530) in a third division.

Obese! Cool

I am considered a clyde, or a hippo in this case I am 6'6" and 240 and used to be a Defensive end in D2 and I don't consider my self fat at all, it just seems that something about the divisions need to be changed

That's pretty lame and hypcritical.  I think they should have "light weight" divisions too.  Perhaps under 130 lbs. can be the "pee wee's" or the "waif" category.  How is calling weavyweight athletes "Hippos" any different from any racial or ethnic slur?

Word!  The undertow from the wake of my massive physique during the swim should suck down the non-weight divison folks anyway.

Is body surfing on a Clydesdale wake considered drafting?

It's foreplay, assuming it's a girl. (woofer exempt)
