Parris Island, South Carolina
United States
Set-up Inc
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 1s
Overall Rank = 162/251
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 4/14
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6. At a bagel egg sandwich and coffee. Drove to the course. #1 and #2.I saw Jim(run4yrlf) and we talked about strategy for the day (this is the last build week for IMAZ). I decided to stay in Zone 3 for the race (which I did).
Event warmup:

Jogged for 10 minutes. Jumped in the pool 55 minutes before the start and did slow 50s to get an idea of race pace. Last ten minutes I jumped on the bottom while in line. I was very sore from my long run, but otherwise good for the race.
Swim
  • 09m 34s
  • 547 yards
  • 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

The gal in front of me was tooooo slow. She was nice, but to pass her I had to really poor on the jets. She would speed upto prevent me from passing. Her pace was at my breast stroke pace.
What would you do differently?:

Next year I'll blow it out and shoot for 8:00-9:00. The 9:34 was pretty easy for me at this point as 500m seems so short.
Transition 1
  • 01m 57s
Comments:

Taking it easy as this is not anything like the IMAZ transition. I'll start sweating these for my mid season sprints.
Bike
  • 40m 25s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.30 mile/hr
Comments:

I just decided to keep the HR around 160, which was an easy and comfortable pace. I wasn't racing, and I feel like I could knock 5 minutes or so off of this time next year. Except for the headwind, I held 20mph+ for most of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. I felt pretty good, but I couldn't really cut loose. I'd like tosee what I could do without limitations ofthe IMAZ training.

My bike computer was out and the Garmin MPH wasn'tworking. That's why I just picked someonewho was going at a reasonable pace and followed.
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

I wasn't trying to go all that fast here. Just relaxing and enjoying the race.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear socks.
Run
  • 26m 15s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

If I hadn't run 16 miles on Thursday I think I could do 7.5minute miles or even less. I hadn't recovered and I was hurting in the quads a lot. I look forward to seeing what I can do with a reasonable taper.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. This was a good effort for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking for tenminutes. Active stretch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was a "C" race for me. I still met my goal of bettering my time from last year. I paced myself well and The fact that the race seemed so much easier this year with improved time makes me realize that I have come along way.
Goals for next year will be to break 1:10 and try to place in Clydes (If I still weigh over 200!)

Event comments:

I met De Cracker and Run4yrlf at the race. I picked up some good tips. We were going to meet for lunch, but I got lost and didn't have phone numbers. Sorry guys!

Nice little snack before your impending huge MEAL!  Way to coast through beating your time from last year ... that ought to give you an idea of who much your training is going to pay dividends on the race day!

Good job!
