Total Time = 58m 47s
Overall Rank = 58/87
Age Group = 35-40
Age Group Rank = 16/17
Pre-race routine:

T-3hrs woke up and ate peanut butter & honey on whole wheat bread and drank cup of water. Went back to sleep until T-2hrs and had banana and another cup of water. At T-15minutes had a clif shot with water.
Event warmup:

Ran 1.5 miles at easy pace and stretched.
Swim
  • 09m 11s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very bad swim. I've never been in open, cold water and wasn't prepared for the difficulty in getting my face in the water. I tried to start with the face down, but either reflex or psyche kept me from doing it. I took on some water and soon my breathing was running away, which made getting face down even harder. Luckily I've built upper body endurance and could still stroke my arms the whole way. Some others couldn't and it hurt them even more.
What would you do differently?:

I've got to learn to get comfortable on the open water. This really hurt me overall as my run and bike were adequate for a much better time had the swim gone better.
Transition 1
  • 02m 34s
Comments:

No problems with transition.
Bike
  • 29m 18s
  • 10 miles
  • 20.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt like I did well here. I caught up to the back of the group after falling back in the swim. So I made up 2-3 minutes here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than getting my own, fitted bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Had my shoes untied! Normally I've got them laced in a way I can just pop the shoes on and they are already double tied. They became untied later and became an issue later.
What would you do differently?:

Tied the shoes double-knotted before
Run
  • 16m 3s
  • 2 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Having my shoes untied in transition area slowed me a bit. I then only single-tied them and then the right one came undone about halfway through the run. I ran on anyway... Passed an AG at the end to come in next to DFL.
What would you do differently?:

Double-tie shoes

Event comments:

My whole family had tee-shirts with "Team Brad" printed on them. My infant son and 4yo daughter had "Team Daddy". They cheered as I was racing along. It was nice because people would be saying "You're Brad." It definitely helped keep me in the water as well. Thanks everyone.

Great race. My swim sucks bad too. I am in your age group. I definately need to visit the pool more. You did great on the bike and run. I swallowed some water like you did and never could regain my stroke.

Where did you get your times from? Are they from your watch? I forgot to hit the lap buttons on my watch.

Congrats on finishing your first tri.

Awesome job Brad! It seems that training smart is paying good results By the way try to do OWS once every week or two to get comfortable and as far as the shoe laces one word: Yanks!

Congrats
