The ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon
58F / 14C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 43m 30s
Overall Rank = 317/8917
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 98/1317
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15am, took a quick shower, ate a bagel with peanut butter, drank my green tea, and I was off. I drank water on the way and listened to some "not so quiet" music. I decided to park downtown to avoid the Marta. I checked in my post-race attire and made my way towards the port-o-potty. Lines were not too bad and they did a good job with the number of johns provided.
Event warmup:

I typically like to run and stretch for about 15 minutes total but it was not very possible with the crowds. I did some light jogging and make my way to the start. I wanted to get as close to the front as possible so I lined up with the 3:30 marathoners. If I was doing the full, I would have likely been there anyways. I stood there stretching a little and no one else was at all. Kinda weird. I kept about a 1/4 water bottle as I knew the first couple of aid stations would be crazy, and I was right. I had to use the bathroom (again) at the start and thought I was screwed as I did not want to stop during the race.
Run
  • 1h 43m 30s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

For my first official half marry, I feel good. I learned a lot with this "training run" and WILL go sub-1:40 next year! I did not stop to go to the bathroom and my left quad tendon was killing me starting at 53 mins. Every step felt like a knife was jabbing me but I had to continue and break 1:45.
What would you do differently?:

Stop drinking about 30 mins before the gun goes off. I would also run a little more before stretching at the start.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched for about 15 mins and ate a bagel and drank lots of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of course knowledge and my quad tendon pain.

Event comments:

Great race and I will do it (or the full marry) again!

Performance: Good
I did not get my splits for the entire run but know I was at around 24 mins for the 5k and 48 for the 10k. At mile 9, I was on pace for a sub 1:40! I could not believe it.
Course: Rolling hills until about mile 10. It was great running through Atlanta and I will not forget this race.

Nice pace throughout ... you'll be able to shave off the three and a half minutes next year just by not waiting in the port-o-let line

Congratulations on your fist Half Mary. You had an impressive run, and I'm sure you could go sub 1:40 next year. I hope the quad/tendon is already feeling better and doesn't hold you back.

Craig- I did not know until the NEXT aid station...plus, there are just some things you have to learn on your own.
