Pre-race routine:

Got up about 5:00 and drove to North Springs MARTA Station. Ate a banana and took a Hammer gel.
Event warmup:

Walked around a bit.
Run
  • 2h 16m 41s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I intended to stick with the 4:30 pace group but could not find them at the start. I was pretty close to the start when the gun went off but it still took me about 6 minutes to get to the start line. The first few miles required a great deal of weaving around in order to try to keep a good pace. I yelled at RocketMan as he whooshed by me about a mile in. I kind of hit a wall on the loooong hill up Freedom Parkway mainly because I had gotten mixed up with some guys who were going too fast. I got pretty depressed right after turning on N. Highland when I overheard a guy saying we had gone almost halfway (we were about at mile 8). I was really dragging as we left the park and walked a couple hundred yards up 10th street. I walked 100 yards or so several more times. I was passed by the marathon winner about 1/2 mile from the finish line. On the last short downhill to the finish I really had breathing problems. I slowed down some and soon after the finish I felt better.

This was my first 1/2 marathon and it was a real learning experience.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate better. I didn't drink enough before the race and compounded that by skipping the first (packed) water stop. The second one was out of water so I didn't get anything to drink until mile 4.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked (hobbled) around and looked for other BT folks. I ran into Courtney, Rocketman, and the Hulkster.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training, still being a bit sick, not hydrating enough.

Way to go Felix. You just completed your first Half Marathon. Congrats! Way to stick with the run, even when it starts getting mentally and physically challenging. I'm sorry I missed you at the race, but glad you ran into a few others.

Great job, Felix! You picked a hilly course for your first 1/2 mary and still had an awesome time! Just think how easy your next race will be on a flatter course!
