Subject: I think it's time for me to move...

I woke up this morning to a car alarm going off. Fine, whatever, happens occassionaly, it turned off. I hear talking outside my window and decide to investigate. There are a couple of men in the next lot over who are hanging outside looking like they are waiting for something (Mind you it's cold in WI again). I look closer, and see that they are Police. Great.

Next thing I know, I hear yelling and see a flash of light. There is a team of officers in SWAT gear battering down the door on the house 2 doors down from me. WTF!!! About 10 minutes later, I see the SWAT guys walking down the alley to their vehicle...those are really big guns!!

I don't know what's going on over there. I don't know that I want to know. I haven't had the best time in this neighborhood. Lots of police calls for loud neighbors, an assault on my own person a month after I moved in (I should have sold my house and moved like everyone said, dammit). This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Being stubborn is not always a good thing...

Similar reasons why my wife and I are selling our house.

The crackhead neighbor that's up all hours.  The people speeding up and down the street, blaring music, then parking and honking.  The 8 year old kid that was kicking our gate singing out "I'm gonna kill you mutha f***in' b**ch".  Never had the SWAT team though.

Lovely place we live.

Feeling it here too....Last week our car got broken into for the 2nd time...I have had a mtn bike stolen from my car port (They actually cut the lock with big bolt cutters), We have had police up and down our street several times...One neighbor "fixes" cars for a living, So there are so many cars in front of his house, that everyone else just double parks on the narrow street...They don't watch their kids which I have almost run over a few thousand times as they run out into the street without looking...Unfortunately, until I find a job that pays me enough, were stuck.

boy, i'm sorry. having the police called now and then is something we've seen around here...and we have friends around here who have had their garages broken into (and one her home), but overall it stays pretty quiet, despite being in the 'inner city' of st. paul/mpls. one of the houses next to us is on the market...move here!

The only "incident" we've had with one of our neighbors (our "neighbors" houses aren't even within sight of our house) is the time one of their beef cattle broke through a fence and I had to go tell them so that we could herd it back to the pasture.  Reading the posts above makes me appreciate where we live even more.

sorry to hear that maggyruth..

When I lived in CT, I moved into a new apartment complex that seemed pretty nice etc... nice apt abutting some evergreens, complete with fireplace, dishwasher etc... But the day I moved in, it was pandemonium with boxes, furniture and of course my cat that wanted to make a b-line to the outside. I stashed my mountain bike on the back patio right up against the sliding glass door and figured I'd move it to storage later in the day once I got settled.

Later around dusk, I went to the back porch... bike was GONE! Like a nimrod, didn't lock but crypts! It was my back porch, the thing was up against my door!...someone was pretty brazen.

Now in WI, I sometimes 'forget' that there are less than honest folks out there.. i.e. rarely lock car, can leave house with door unlocked, but would be really bummed to lose another bike so I carry a lock. I will admit that I have gone to the local pool with my burley attached to my hybred and left it unlocked though..figure someone wouldn't get away too quickly but then again... thanks for the reality check.

Never had a problem where we live.  Have even left the door unlocked at night (by accident) without incident.  One day I got home to find the front door not only unlocked, it was also unlatched and open a few inches.  Nothing taken.  Must have not closed it tightly when I left earlier in the day.  So, if you want to move to the Rockford area, I’ll let you know when we decide to sell (if you haven’t moved by then).

EDIT:  You’d have grandma and grandpa types as neighbors too.

Just remember that these incidents could happen anywhere.

I lived in Chapel Hill, NC for 2 years in a great apt. complex.  Little did I know there was a serial rapist living in the building behind me.  He was convicted of 3 counts and assumed in a number of other sexual assaults.  Just goes to show that you never know who your neighbors are.

The funny thing is that the apt complex lost a bunch of residents as a result of the bad publicity.  I often think these situations make the place that much more safe.  But clearly people thought moving to an apt. a mile away was safer.  I stayed.

Never had an issue where I live now but the duplex we rented before buying this place we had a drug raid.  They were after the guys in the lower level but also came through our front door as we shared a common laundry area.  You are right - they carry BIG guns!  I told the landlord that night, before the police left I was moving and f##k the 30 day notice!

Need some donkeys to help you move?  If so, I think firstnet and jmwebs are free.

Seriously, if you can move, you should.  Occasionally is one thing, but repeated incidents is quite another.

I have been accused of being cheap, but never free.

I hope you can get out. It really does not sound like a good situation.

Yes, they COULD possibly happen anywhere, but I think it's safe to say, you increase your odds of it NOT happening by taking a long hard look at where you choose to live.  Even in a very low crime state and city like where I live, there are just areas you don't move into.  If you do, yeah MAYBE nothing will ever happen.  But you certainly up the chances dramatically, and the city wide crime statistics will bear that out.

While I appreciate and completely understand that, I think I've had more then my far share of s*** living in the particular neighborhood I'm in.  I should have moved after the first assault 3 years ago.  The fact that the neighbors have gone to pot just makes it worse.

I will not give you an addy, but I live with this hot little number that likes to kick a$$ with hand held pitch forks.  I doubt you would want to mess with her.
