Sunny
Total Time = 1h 49m 25s
Overall Rank = 161/230
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 20/32
Pre-race routine:

I ate waffles for breakfast, drank 2 cups of coffee and headed out the door at 5:25 AM.

Truck was packed up the night before.

It was a little chilly at that time of morning but I had hopes it would warm up.
Event warmup:

I had a lot of time after registering so I stretched and then slipped on my wet suit and went to the water to see if I remember how to swim. I had a good few strokes so went back to the landing after getting acclimated to the cool water.

I readjusted my goggles due to the kids using them. Luckily they hadn't dry rotted or anything. I couldn't find my clear goggles so I had to wear the tinted ones.

Socialized with all the others while waiting for the race to start.
Swim
  • 19m 2s
  • 800 meters
  • 02m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

Wow. I had trouble getting my breath again. I seem to have trouble with breathing when my face is in cold water. I spent a good bit of time either on my back or breast stroking to keep my face out of the water. There was nothing I could have done to prevent that.

I haven't swam since Cajun Man in Sept last year. (or around there) Over all a good performance for zero swim training but below average for my regular swim.
What would you do differently?:

If I had the chance to go swim somewhere I would.
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

I am going to have to just tell you here that I struggled with getting my suit off my heels. For some reason I forgot that you usually just strip it off inside out. I was trying to point my toes and slide my foot out haha! Luckily for me this was just an "exercise" day and I never got bummed about it but it just goes to show you that there are some aspects of race day that need to rehearsed.

Something that I had planned on doing took extra time... which was putting on socks. I usually don't wear them but the tops of my feet are still a mess from last weeks Judo Tournament. It would have been very messy to not wear them. I had to take the socks off and re-dry my feet twice. It is hard to get socks on when your feet are wet.
What would you do differently?:

Strip off the suit the correct way.
Leave socks off if at all possible.
Bike
  • 58m 35s
  • 18.66 miles
  • 19.11 mile/hr
Comments:

First time on my Tri bike since Cajun man. Felt pretty good but I may need a new seat. Toward the end of the ride I could tell that I was going to be chaffed.

I passed probably 10-20 people on the bike but got passed by 5 people who just flew by me. Most were in older age groups too. :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a solid bike for zero riding on it. I felt the muscles in my legs burn a few times when I would pass so I know it uses a slightly different muscle group set (or at least different parts of those groups).

I would also push bigger gears next time. I like my cadence around 80-85.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

This transition was much easier. :) I'm not sure where I spent over a minute but it seemed like a smooth transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 27m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I was ready for the run this year. No tricking me with the run-past-the finish-line for another mile. At about mile 2 my lower back started to tighten up but for doing zero brick runs in a very long time this was an easy run.

No stopping just slow :)

What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and drank water after the run. I hadn't really exerted myself so the most difficult thing to do was get my timing chip off which I had duct tapped.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

nada

Event comments:

I like this race. It was the state championship which makes it pull some good athletes.

I decided to do this race a few days before Saturday. The use of the wet suit made this doable for me mentally.

Also, seeing many of my old tri buddies makes me realize that I need to get back into racing. The triathlete group of people are top notch and a very fun bunch.

Despite not training for this race I still beat my last years time by 7 minutes. And that is a success if you ask me :)

Matt,

You snuck that one in on me. Really nice race after a layoff. Did you use any of your judo tricks in the race. Seems like it could come in handy on the swim. How bout Gulf Shores in 2 weeks, we would be pretty close I think. Glad to see you back racing again.

Didn't have to use any Judo moves the whole time. I probably should have used them on my wet suit though

I am pretty confident it will be wet suit legal. Water temp in mid to upper 60's now and its only 2 weeks to the race.

Great job Matt. Pretty impressive for a last minute decision with minimal training. Way to go!
