Marymosc....I work right in Clifton....maybe we can get early am or afterwork rides in. After my bassman....I now know I need to get my in the saddle!!! sounds like a possibility. though i just looked at your logs and you are a more accomplished rider than i. i'm still on my clunky mountain bike and the shoes and pedals i was promised as a b-day present in march have yet to materialize. however, if you wouldn't mind riding w/a newbie like me, we can make it happen. my husband is the cyclist of the family and might be a better riding partner. Veteran 157 Scotch Plains, NJ | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance Trust me...I am a newbie....but I would glady ride with your husband if he can help me. Getting out of the water early, then just getting smoked on the bike was really tough. I have been a runner for years, but I need the bike time to get better. |

Uh, you did Danskin last year. It was advertised as being 1/2 mile (880 yards) but it was really more like 1/3 of of mile or so, so more like 550-750 yards. And that swim in the lake is a lot easier than the bay swim in Danskin (no little waves to worry about for one), though there are no swim angels at the NJ tri But you shouldn't be concerned, as long as you actually get in the water before the race. |

Expert 696 Sugar Hill, GA | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance I might be crazy but I think they're pulling a bait and switch. I clearly remember the website promising a tyr transition bag to all finishers. Checking the website this morning I noticed that this has changed, now finishers are getting a tyr mesh bag. Not nearly as exciting. I'm not complaining, I signed up for this tri before I knew what the swag was, but I was excited to get the nice transition bag. |

Member 391 Wenonah, NJ | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance You're giving us waaay too much credit. To pull a bait and switch you have to have the cunning and intelligence to create an elaborate scheme...we're not that smart. We just screwed up. When TYR came on as a sponsor we asked them for a picture of the bag they are graciously giving to the finishers. We posted the picture they provided. It was on our web site for three days. At some point we started scratching our heads and thought, "there is no way they are giving that bag to 4,500 people" (over our four races). The bag retails for $69 and even if it's made in some third world country where labor works for ten cents a day the actual cost of the bag would be at least $15 per bag. That would mean they were spending over $67,000 (actual cash out of pocket) on the promotion. We took the picture down and got in contact with TYR...the picture they sent was for the winner of the TYR-Transition Times contest (for the fastest transition time for T1 & T2 combined). The bag they are giving to all finishers is a mesh swim bag like the one pictured...it's a $19 retail value...still very generous of TYR! If someone signed up during the time we had the transition bag posted and signed up because of that bag posted we will gladly allow them to opt out of the race and provide a refund. TYR is also providing TYR tri-suits ($220 value) for the fastest swim splits (male and female) in each race. There is also going to be a bike giveaway with Knapp's and Specialized and water bottles provided by Knapp's Cyclery. Larry |

Expert 696 Sugar Hill, GA | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance I'm psyched for the race regardless of the giveaways. Bait and switch was just a poor attempt at humor. I work in the development department of a non-profit where we do special events and such, I know exactly how hard it is to get sponsors and items to give away... keep up the good work!! |

Larry Not a specific complaint about this, but in general with give-aways based on winning times, if you think about it... Winners usually have their own stuff already and probably are most particular about which brands they use - perhaps even sponsored. Then, they'll just eBay the suit. I'd rather see the winners get a small cash award and have a random drawing so the "average" competitor has a chance. Nonetheless, that is generous of TYR and of the RD's and does add a race-within-a-race. |

I don't necessarily disagree with what you're saying, it's just hard to have a contest that doesn't reward the top finishers. we didn't want to do just a random giveaway ( we will have plenty of those). In our Philadelphia Women's Triathlon (shameless plug) the fastest swim split was by a woman who finished 230th in the race...she beat all the elites and pro's. The fastest swim split for the NJ Olympic was by a guy who finished 90th. I would suggest serious training on you transitions to win the TYR transition bag (shameless plug #2). As a matter of fact I'd like to see people sprint through transition in their wetsuit...grab their bike without changing or putting on shoes or anything...and do the same thing when coming in off the bike...do the whole race in a wetsuit and barefoot! (disclaimer...you will most likely die if you attempt this! But hey...you could win a nice bag). |

I needed that on a Friday afternoon. Thanks Larry. Edited by gadzinm 2007-05-18 2:13 PM |

Regular 62 Cranford, NJ | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance Water Quality, if anyone knows about that it's me. Last year this was my second race ever. I had done one sprint prior and I decided to go for the OLY in this race. Well the long course psyched me out and I never got a good swim rhythm. As a result I spent about 50 minutes in the water. Longer than anyone else I assure you. The water was fine. The lifeguards were also on top of things making sure I was alright since I kept stopping to tread water. I refused to quit and kept on going. When I hit the shore I got a big cheer from the crowd for not quitting. Tri-fans and families are the absolute best! I am looking forward to going back this year and being more prepared for the swim. It was a great race and I can't wait to do it again. |

Nah, I'm not nervous, nooootttdtdt nevrous atttt alllllllllllllll. If you're nervous, that's a good thing. You'll have a good race. Everyone gets nervous, even (especially?) the pro's. Like I've said previously, I did the race last year. It's a quality race. A fun time. You're going to finish and be all pumped up and on top of the world. |

Veteran 243 Glendale, California | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance Just finished the Hammonton Sprint Tri last weekend and was considering the NJ Tri. When I saw this thread of folks participating, I went right away to sign up. Rock on! Anyone know of nearby lakes to practice open water swimming? I'm a decent pool swimmer but last weekend proved I am not an open water fish. Someone at work recommended Mirror Lake near Fort Dix. |

Expert 1296 | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance CGI does open water swims in Lake Wenonah in Wenonah NJ. They also have a run course set up. Highly recommed it...just need to be a USAT member or bring I think $10 for the one day fee. Not bad at all. Now that you signed up for the NJ tri you will also get added to the mail list that they send out. You can get all of the info from there too. All of this promoting I am doing......geeezzz.....how about a job? Larry? Michele? Just Kidding... CGI is a top notch organization you will enjoy the race.... |

Veteran 119 Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: New Jersey State Triathlon - Sprint Distance I want to do at least one OWS before the tri so I don't totally panic out there, and tried to MapQuest Lake Wenonah and came up empty - I'm coming from about a half-hour south of Allentown, so I have no clue where I'm going. Is it known by any other name? |
