Pre-race routine:

Ate breakfast at 4:45 bad bagel from 7-11 and peanut butter. need to think through this some more before OKC. Arrived early and set up transition. Didn't forget anything, which I was worried about.
Event warmup:

None really, just walked around trying to get a feel for what a triathlon was all about.
Swim
  • 11m 12s
  • 328 yards
  • 03m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

OWS - wow - Unprepard for what it was really going to be like. Thrashing everywhere. I guess I should have gotten to the front, but I am still not sure of my swimming skills and got off to the back and side. When the horn sounded, I went into freestyle form and was running into people everywhere. Couldn't get around people, ended up doing the breast stroke for most of race because everytime I tried to get around the crowd, I almost ran over some one. Found out that doing the b-stroke for such a distance can really make you sore the next day if you are not used to it...
What would you do differently?:

Get towards the front next time, be more confident
Transition 1
  • 04m 7s
Comments:

First transition ever, learned a lot. No real issues getting suit off. Must practice riding without socks, as I had the wet-foot-sock wrestle thing happening...
What would you do differently?:

No socks, may need different cycle shoes in future
Bike
  • 37m 42s
  • 10 miles
  • 15.92 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt good on the bike, (probably just happy to be out of the water!) I felt like I was really doing better than the results showed. I focused on how many I passed vs how many passed me. Score was about 60 or so to 3. About 3 miles out, I came to a mental crossrosads - Push hard or lay off to "save myself" for the run. Decided to keep pushing as hard as I could, because no matter what I did, the run was going to be brutal for me. (See notes below)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, just going to take some more training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Will need to practice some transitions at home before I try the fancy moves...
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 23m 18s
  • 2 miles
  • 11m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Brutal for me - lack of run training showed very clearly. Probably ended up walking about 1/3 or more of course. Heart rate would go up, I would walk until it came back down. Finish was great, family was there cheering me on. Am I really a triathalete now?
What would you do differently?:

Train more for next one.
Post race
Warm down:

Probably a mistake, but I just kinda walked around with wife and daughter, probably should have stretched out some or something. Stood and cheered others on. Saw Kenny (Ten9T6) finish. Saw Aaron and Gary. Great to meet everyone.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training, lack of experience. Need to re-work training plan to focus more on run and swim.

Event comments:

Great race, team play tri put on a good event. Next year I will do the sprint and then attend some of the other activities that went on all day.

Are you a triathlete now? YES!

The swim... ugh.. what a hard swim that was! I think everyone struggled some at some point. Between how crowded it was at the start and sighting into the sun, it was hard.

Biking without shoes- nothing to practice there. I have the most tender feet (I even run with flip flops from the water to T1).. and I just put on my cycling shoes and take off. By the time I hit T2, my feet are dry and the socks go on fine for the run. I would also suggest having a small hand towel so you can dry off your feet in T1. This has always worked wonderfully for me and I can get all the rocks, etc. off my feet that way.

Great race and I hope to see you racing at other events this year! This is on the start of great things to come.

Congrats on your race! I am sure that now that you have one behind you everything makes so much more sense. Your first OWS can be pretty overwhelming, but you did it!

The first race is always a special one.  And hell yeah you're a triathlete!  OWS is a beast if you are unprepared, as I found out as well.  But it seems like a little practice will go a long way.

Transition practice really helps alot.  Mostly mentally.  It's nice to go into the transition area and not think, but just act.  Because if you're like me, I can barely remember anything after the swim.

But congrats on a good race.

It was good meeting ya,, great job on getting the first of many tri's done.

I put baby powder in my socks when I set up the transition, and during t1 I had a small bottle that I poof'd on my feet, it makes it easier getting socks on if you were them
