Overcast
Total Time = 5h 48m 57s
Overall Rank = 67/152
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 8/16
Pre-race routine:

The usual. Ate a 700 calorie breakfast. Showered and headed to the race. Arrived at Las Colinas about 6:00. Set up transition and wandered around. Talked to a few BT'ers.
Event warmup:

No warmup. I probably should run for a warm up because I tend to swim better if I have a warmup. But, what's the point, if I warmup and then stand around for 30 minutes waiting on my wave.
Swim
  • 35m 40s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 51s / 100 meters
Comments:

The water was cold but felt really good. I lined up in the front to the right. The first 100 m was great. I felt good and was on some fast feet. But, as has happened in past races, the second 100 m was a problem. I couldn't get my breathing right. If I have a good warmup, then my swim start is great. Without a warmup, it's like my heart can't catchup with my muscles and supply enough O2. Had to breast stroke a few minutes then continue swimming. Also had to clear my goggles at one point. So some time lost there.

After these episodes, swimming went great. My navigation, for the most part, was good. The turn around bouy came quick and I was happy to see it. The swim back to transition was good. I really lengthened my stroke and stayed on the bouys. Near the end, I did get off course a bit. I sighted and saw swimmers ahead. I sighted again and realized they were coming towards me! I had drifted into the oncoming next wave. Corrected that before swimming head on into someone.

Except for the first 200 m, it was a good swim and I met my goal time of 35 minutes. A better first 200 m and I would have beaten my goal time.
What would you do differently?:

Warmup. Go for a run. That might help with the first 200 m. Also, practice some open starts with out warming up.
Transition 1
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

Wetsuit strippers! Yeah. Plopped on the ground and had it stripped off in no time. Long run back to my rack. Socks and bike shoes on and then running for the bike start. Good transition considering how far we had to run.
What would you do differently?:

I've never practiced the flying, shoes on the bike start. That would speed up my transition.
Bike
  • 3h 03m 42s

  • 18.29 mile/hr
Comments:

This race was a 'B' race and mostly for training. My plan was to stay in z2 for the first two loops and then z3 on the last loop. I knew there was a possibility of strong winds so I was prepared change the plan if needed.

The first loop went by nicely and I was averaging about 20 mph and in z2. Just like planned. The wind was blowing but wasn't too bad. On the second loop the wind picked up. I was able to maintain 19-20 mph but my HR was climbing into z3. I decided it wasn't worth the effort since this was a 'B' race and I planned to continue trianing for BSLT this week. I backed off and maintained a constant intensity in z2. Basically, I tried to fly with the tailwind and take it easy into the headwind.

Fairly uneventful ride. I did have to stop once to adjust my helmet. At this point I heard 'BT' and someone flew by. It was MarkQuiet. Caught up to him and rode along for a while.

Didn't even come close to my goal time of 2:45:00 or 20 mph.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a training race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Good transition. Shoes off while on the bike. Ran with the bike. Running shoes on. Put on hat and race belt while running.

Saw Marcy, Steve and John as I was running out of transition. Always great to see the BT jock strappers.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 04m 44s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Got into the run easily. Stayed in z1-2 during the first mile. Stopped at the first aid station to use the porta potty. When I came out I saw MarkQuiet. Walked along with him for a minute or so then started running. I saw several BT'ers along the run course. Looking at my mile splits it's obvious that I became tired at about mile 9.

Met my goal time and pace for the run.
Overall this was a good run. It's my longest run of the year. I felt like I held my form well and really concentrated on maintaining good form even during the last miles.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Walked around. Walked back to transition to grab my bottle of Recoverite.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training volume. My trianing volume for the year is only 500 miles biking and 180 miles running plus swimming. So, not a bad race on minimal training volume. I should have double the volume at this point in the year. But, a hip injury sidelined me for a while. Much of my fitness from IMFL training last year has carried over to this year.

Event comments:

This was the first year for the Playtri Festival. I think they did a very good job. Everything seemed well organized. My only complaint was the post race food. They should do more than bannanas and oranges.

Looks like you had a great race! I saw you run by... other BTers pointed you out. Sorry I didn't get to meet you!

I hear ya on needing to warm up before swimming. I don't really feel good in the water into 500 yards or so. Yea, uuummm... sprints are hard on me... unless I get to swim for awhile.

Great "B" race man! Now on the to the "A" race!

Very nice race!  Those winds were pretty intense, so I think most people had to slide a little on their goal pace.  I saw you running out of T2--you looked like you had lots of energy!

Great job on the race. It was nice seeing you out on the course. I sort of figured that you were playing in the wind. If my brakes were not rubbing I would have tried to keep up with you on the bike.

Great job staying with your plan and posting a solid race. Sounds like smart execution on your part.

Going "easy" and being sub 6 is a very successful performance.
