Pre-race routine:

Ah, if only I could have a real pre-race routine.
Woke up at 3am, because that's when the dogs decided to start barking. Knocked back some Ensure and tried to lay back down, but the dogs were having none of it. Packed up the car and the husband and made it over to the venue at around 6am. Got body marked, picked up my chip, learned how to put it on and learned how to rack my bike.
Event warmup:

Ummm, shivering?
  • 06m 33s
  • 250 meters
  • 02m 37s / 100 meters

I immediately got passed by the lady behind me, but then I kept my place. I only got one elbow, and other than that, it might as well have been a leisure swim. I guess everyone around me seeded themselves well. I shot out pretty fast, but my breathing stayed good and I felt okay coming out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

How about get in the pool the week or so before the race? Maybe get some lessons? I think I did pretty well though.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s

Hippity hop through the parking lot, then on with the shoes and helmet.
What would you do differently?:

Had a bottle of water to rinse the asphalt off my feet.
  • 52m 26s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 14.22 mile/hr

This would be where I need to work. I got passed a lot on the bike, and it was by far the most difficult leg for me. The wind was tough, and my spirit took quite the beating. I've decided that LEFT is a swear word. The second loop was tougher, and the hill was pretty hard for me. I was in the easiest gear and felt like I wasn't even moving. But I got clipped in well, and I didn't fall or anything getting off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle!
Transition 2
  • 02m 18s

Dismounted without falling! Tried to run in shoes, but didn't manage it. I walked my bike to the rack and swapped my helmet for my visor, put on my race belt and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to do stuff faster.
  • 31m 27s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile

My calves were really quite tight heading into the run, and the first mile seemed to last forever. I stopped a couple times to stretch out my calves, but that didn't really seem to help until about the halfway point. I finally got my strength at the last corner, and I ran strong into the finish with a huge smile on my face. I grinned and smiled for the cameras, jumped through the finish line and got my medal. My very first triathlon medal! (Oh, and a PR for a 5k)
What would you do differently?:

Stopped and stretched longer rather than worry about "wasting time" stretching.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a doughnut, drank water, had some fruit. Smiled and celebrated with my husband.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited training for the last month. Inexperience.

Event comments:

I did my first triathlon three years ago, and it was a mini. But this time I really felt like part of the club, really truly a triathlete. This was a fun event, and I'd do it again.

Awesome work!  Congrats on the finish and finally "feeling" like a triathlete, because that is what you are!

The wind did suck, but it was oh so nice on the final long straight back to the transition, wasn't it!

Awesome, awesome job! I  agree with you -- that wind on the bike is totally demoralizing.  Sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up!
