Overall Rank = 90/250

Age Group Rank = 4/22
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:00. Shower, made a bagel, drank a Coke Zero. Brought my bags out to the car and headed over to Eileen's. Slapped my bike on the back of her car and took off.

Once at the race, we racked out bikes right next to run out ... it was the best we could do. Went inside and got marked (and warmed up!). Amazingly, we did NOTHING to warm up physically.
Event warmup:

Watched Eileen's wave go off, and another guy I knew was there, watched his wave go off. Hung out, gelled about 15 minutes before my wave, counted the wave before me. Hopped in the water. Of course, the lane I was in had the swimmer who was last in heat before me. I had time to dunk my head and go!
Swim
  • 08m 29s
  • 450 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim. I was in a later wave because I mistyped my time when I signed up. I was the first one out by a lap and a half. Ooops. Although, I really didn't mind being the first guy out and looking like a rock star.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I sign up with the right time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Not my swiftest entry into my shoes once on the bike. My feet were still a little wet. VERY windy on half the course. Nice and fast on the other part. All balanced out.
What would you do differently?:

Dry my feet.
Bike
  • 36m 30s
  • 11.18 miles
  • 18.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Into the wind just sucked. And it was COLD but really, I figured everyone else was as cold as I was. I got passed by 3 guys, but no women. :)
What would you do differently?:

Keep hammering on the bike. This is clearly an area for improvement.
Transition 2
  • 02m 37s
Comments:

Everything was going okay and as I tried to jam my right foot into my running shoes AAARRRGGGHHH! Major pain ... cramp in my right calf. I had to take time to rub that sucker out.
What would you do differently?:

Umm, drink more to avoid the damn cramp!
Run
  • 25m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

I held back on the run in hopes that I wouldn't tweak the cramp anymore. I would call it painful comfort. When there was a mile left I though f' it ... I'm going. And I did. Definitely negative splits.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder on the run regardless. Deal with the consequences later. It cost me 3rd place in my AG.
Post race
Warm down:

Took a HOT shower. Ate a bananny. Drank lots of water. Got the hell out of the cold and into a warm car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Cramping ... clearly a hydration issue.

Event comments:

The course isn't anything special but the people/volunteers made the race well worth doing. It was really nice!

Nice race!  Cramping sucks - especially when it cost you a top 3 AG finish.  Way to work through it though!  Nice mental toughness.

Great job on the bike!  And solid run too!

You'll grab a podium spot before too long here if you keep this up.

Nice job. I can relate to them darn cramps. Still very impressive.
I think I will do this race next instead of Terre Haute.
