Total Time = 57m 24s
Overall Rank = 61/300
Age Group = M3039
Age Group Rank = 19/39
Pre-race routine:

BBQ party night before, had to go. Had 1 beer, steak, corn, potatoes and half a loaf of garlic toast. Drank several liters of water.

Woke up at 6:15, ate a bowl of cereal. Loaded the car, triple checked that I wasn't forgetting anything critical, drove to site.
Event warmup:

Because it was a pool swim, there was 2+ hours between start and my swim time. So really we just wandered around and watched other swimmers. Stretched on deck while waiting for start, first time with the obnoxious swim cap.
Swim
  • 11m 7s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swam exactly as a practice drill. Hated the cap, but went fine. Was more nervous that expected (non-swimmer background). Concentrated on NOT overdoing it.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster with less effort. :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

For my first race, all the hints from BT and friends that have raced before really helped. I did 5+ runs in my garage after jumping out of the tub so there were no surprises. A few seconds could be shaved here and there but no big mistakes.
What would you do differently?:

Might not put my watch on next time and just carry it.
Bike
  • 31m 24s
  • 15.29 kms
  • 29.22 km/hr
Comments:

First time biking after swimming - wasn't too bad as I don't kick in the pool. Was a bugger to keep the HR down, each hill would drive up to 170 and I'd have to ease up to get it back.

What would you do differently?:

More aero. Go faster, less effort. :)
Transition 2
  • 00m 40s
Comments:

I was stunned this all worked. I passed people just riding on the one pedal and landing running full speed. It felt fantastic. Helmet off and shoes on - I did pause to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything cause it seemed too quick.
What would you do differently?:

Have faith in the practice runs and just go. Use the lap timer to get more accurate transition times.
Run
  • 12m 44s
  • 2.57 kms
  • 04m 57s  min/km
Comments:

This was very hard. I don't push like this in training, only other time was on a corp challenge bike race. But at least I knew where my line was.
What would you do differently?:

More running practice, so I can go faster with .... less effort. :P I will have to slow down a bit on the next race as it's almost double the length.

Post race
Warm down:

I forgot to stretch, had some water then a 6 piece nugget meal at McDicks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1st race, need a better base next year.

Event comments:

A good beginner race. I think that people that have raced before should be noted on the results as it would be morally encouraging for the BOPers to know how many pros/teams were there just to practice transitions etc.

Heart rate avg was 160 (ZONE 4) which was higher than I'd like, but as first race I wasn't going to totally hold back. For a longer run (next race) I will have no choice. At it's lowest (148) I was barely into 3.
