Total Time = 7h 09m 37s
Overall Rank = 95/116
Age Group = 35-39M
Age Group Rank = 19/19
Pre-race routine:

setup transition, porta-potty, body mark, wetsuit.
Event warmup:

light stretching
Swim
  • 37m 1s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

felt much better than my first OWS race in March. I was breathing only on my right side, which was ok since the shore was there so I could monitor my course. I was pretty good about lifting my head about every 2-3 strokes to re-sight on the buoys. I stopped once to rinse my goggles out because they were too foggy to see, but that was before the first turn and they were fine the rest of the way. I even used the turn technique an OWS friend showed me a few weeks ago at a practice swim to round the buoys.
What would you do differently?:

maybe push my arms a bit more. I took it pretty easy since I didn't want to burn out too soon, but putting a bit more work on my arms wouldn't have hurt my performance the rest of the race.
Transition 1
  • 06m 15s
Comments:

I got winded running to T1 due to the altitude and a bit of a climb from the lake. This made it hard to try and eat anything like I had planned. Wetsuit strippers made easy work of the wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

walk the hill to T1 so I could eat a bit more before the bike.
reapply sunscreen.
Bike
  • 3h 32m 31s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.81 mile/hr
Comments:

I didn't find the aid station with food, but I didn't stop to ask either.
I drove the course before the race and was deceived by the hills near the end that looked easier from the car than they were on the bike. Had my avg speed up to 18 mph till I got to the later hills.
What would you do differently?:

take more food with me.
more hill/strength training.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

New cleats on my bike shoes were slippery and I almost fell.
took my time, but I didn't get a T2 split and I don't know if this time is in my bike or run leg. I changed from bike jersey to running singlet.
What would you do differently?:

reapply sunscreen.
get a tri-shirt to wear for both bike and run.
Run
  • 2h 53m 49s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Altitude combined with mental exhaustion slowed me down by more than I had expected.
What would you do differently?:

mentally push harder
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

mental exhaustion. lack of nutrition on the bike.

Event comments:

The post-race lunch had run out of chips by the time I got done. I think that was one of the worst problems, so I would rate this a pretty good event. Definitely on my "try again" list.

Well, I finished my first HIM. Total time was just over 7hr 9 min. 19th out of 19 in AG. Not DFL overall, but still would have been nice to not be last. Oh well, DFL>DNF>DNS

Here is the short version:
Good things:

- finished the swim in 10th place (AG) of 19 finishers
- finished the bike faster than I had feared worst case (by 30 min)

Bad things:
- Slowest HM I've ever run - almost 3 hours (ok, only HM in a triathlon, but still)
- sunburn (I used sunscreen, but should have reapplied in each transition)

Overall, I am happy, especially since I know I can do better.

The long version (with pictures) if you are interested

Hey, that was a great swim and you did well overall.  One of these days I hope to be able to do a HIM.

A HUGE acheivement, and you should be very proud of yourself!!!

Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow.

Great job!!! Super fast swim!!!  I think the elevation and intensity of the sun was killer, so the fact that you were able to hang out there for that long is amazing!!!  Awesome job!

Great job, Stephen! Way to rock the Half Iron! Sounds like you had a good time out there and definitely learned some lessons. I'm workin' on getting the nutrition piece dialed in for my HIM coming up in Sept.

As for your "slow" half mary, the time improvement you're looking for is hiding in your bike. If you want to run that faster half mary in a HIM, you need to RIDE LOTS! At least that's what all the experienced folks here are telling me.

Oh, and you weren't even close to DFL. Almost 20% of the competitors came in after you. Again, congratulations!

Cheers!

Tom
