Pre-race routine:

I was up at 6:00 and wanted to be out the the door in about 20 minutes (the race was only 10 minutes form the house), so I got dressed made peanut-butter toast and a chocolate milk for the road and was out the door.
Event warmup:

Not much of a warm-up, just set up my space and got in the looooong line for the potties. Got to visit for a few minutes with friends and then it was time to head to the beach. When we got to the water, my stomach had sunk to my toes and my heart was racing. I really didn't want a repeat of Dancekin. So I prayed and did some deep breathing.
Swim
  • 21m 33s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well, part of my prayer was answered, I didn't drown. And therein lies the best part of my swim... I also prayed that I wouldn't be last... Seriously, I headed out, determined to take my time and focus on controlled breathing and a strong stroke. I did that until the 1st bouy about 50-75 yards out, then everybody bunched up, it got crowded and I lost all my rhythm and momentum. The waves were strong and I just couldn't get it together. Soooo, once again, I flipped onto my back and started backstroking. The problem was, I couldn't get my breathing under control and so with a wide open mouth and waves washing over me at regular intervals I was sucking in lots of air and lots of water. I hated every minute of the swim and it seemed it would never end. I was getting passed left and right and every now and then I needed to flip over to make sure I wasn't swimming across the river instead of down the river! Eventually I got passed by everyone and I mean everyone. I was the last out of the water, although I think I passed the timing mat before others who got out of the water first.
What would you do differently?:

Either really work on my open water skills or perfect my backstroke! I'm thinking I'm gonna be spending alot of time in the open water this summer.
Transition 1
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

My run from the beach to transition was a bit slow, because I was so worn out, but I was able to slide my suit of with no problem and had move through t1 with no problems. I went sockless for the first time and I think it definetly helped my time and I didn't mind the sockless feeling at all.
What would you do differently?:

Have a better swim, so I can run faster!
Bike
  • 40m 26s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.81 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a good time on the bike. This was my first race on the new bike and I was really pleased. I worked really hard to catch up to anybody who also might be in the race. There was one guy ahead of my by about a 100 yards, the whole time. I never did catch him, but I did catch up to a group of riders by mile 5 and had passed most of them by mile 7. I was really proud of myself on this leg of the race.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Helmut off, gloves off, racked the bike, cap and sunglasses on as I ran out. This was when I really felt the saltwater in my belly and was sure I would vomit somewhere along the route.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 36m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 11m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

The saltwater I ingested seriously affected my run. It was the first time I wondered if I'd make it through to the finish line. I started VERY, VERY SLOW and didn't get much faster than SLOW, but I did get into a nice rhythm and I never puked.
What would you do differently?:

not swallow river water!!!
Post race
Warm down:

Gathered up my stuff and headed out. I honestly was feeling to emotional to hang out and visit with friends, so just headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim

Event comments:

I think to race was very well run and it stared on time, so that was really nice. There was a lack of water stations I thought. The first one had no water, only ice, I guess they'd run out and the other was 2 miles in in the run. Otherwise it was one I would do again.

You should be proud of yourself, you did great. Sometimes you can not help drinking a little river water, just be happy it was not the Elizabeth river.

Over all you had a great race.  Open water can be very tough and you hung in there when the going was rough!!!  Then you rocked the bike girl friend, way to go.  I think you did great on the run, too.  Learn from the parts that didn't go so smoothly, polish the positives and you will rock that next race!!!!

Great race! That was some killer chop on the swim (at least I thought so). I later heard the wind was blowing against the current/tide which caused the swells we had to swim through. So, I think you did great keeping your wits about you and doing what you had to do to get it done!

Great job pushing through!!!  You should be proud of yourself as those were tough conditions.

I did the race too and the chop wasn't easy. Keep at it and the swim will come around - I speak from experience.

Congrats again!

Great job hanging in there with a tough swim! You had a super bike and hung in there during a tough run. I suffered during the run too Great job with the race and great seeing you out there.

Hey, it is nice to meet a back of the packer who may actually do the same race with me from time to time!  I really understand how it feels to be frustrated at the end of a race, even when you did your best.  Sometimes it is hard to be at the back of the pack.  However, even though we are in the back, we are still there, trying and pushing just like everyone else.  That is what is so great about tris for me.... everyone understands no matter how fast or slow they are.

I am really impressed with your times, especially after consuming a ton of saltwater.  That water was SOOOOOOO nasty.  It always creeps me out when I start tasting it and I have to really focus on not thinking about it or else it is hard to continue.

Well happy racing and I will check in to see what your races are and maybe we will be at another one together some time!
