Sean,

I don't want to say it, but I told you so.  Those spinnerval's will kick your ever lovin' a$$.  I find myself having to cheat on the gears every once in a while.  Now, all my running workouts will be preceeded by a spinnerval warm-up.

Spinervals are the only thing that make trainer rides tolerable for me. I've tried watching tv and dvd's, but they can't come clsoe to those Spinerval dvd's. It helps me to have Troy yelling at me to motivate me to keep going. I also love the way my legs feel when they're completely toasted. It's that good kind of pain that lets me know that I had a great workout.

I have a few of them. I use the "Time Trial", "Uphill grind", and the recovery videos. I am afraid to take "Mental Toughness" and Muscle Breakdown" out of the wrappers. Every time I go to get out a video I look at those last two and say "H*ll no!". I usuaslly end up with the recovery video

I've got the 'no mercy' two hour interval session...it is a good thing I sweat copiously, so it hides the tears that are usually streaming down my face by the end. :-)

One thing about these is that it instantly made me feel like I havent been working hard enough when I'm outside because with the exception of a few climbs Im NEVER working this hard.

can anyone explain this to me? i mean are you all just watching a video? or is this something that is hooked up to a trainer? i am totally lost about the trainer deal. does the trainer hooked to the bike have something that adjusts the resistance? totally confused!!!

Its just a video. Not connected to the trainer. Starts off with spinning warm up then you gain resistence just going through the gears. the trainer i have has 5 levels of resistence at one point he says to turn it all the way up if you have the resistence but I politely skipped that instructrion as there was plenty of resistence just in the gear. it is also based on cadence. ie In the big cog with the middle of the cassette (15) and a cadence of 80. it makes a lot more sense if you watch the video im not great at explanation.

They are simply video's that walk you through very intense and painful workouts when you're on your trainer.  The video instructs you on which chain ring and gear to use for each segment and also talks about what perceived levels of effort you should be at for the segment.  Trust me, these will make you curse, make your legs burn, and generally bring you to tears.

I have not yet made it through one entire video without cheating on the gears.  As Sean said above, if you honestly stick with the video's instructions, you work a lot harder on these than you do outside on your rides.  Its why you will get a great workout in just 45 minutes.

For $1200 you can buy a computrainer, that includes a variable resistance trainer, on which you can program any course you ride or want to imagine you ride. If you want to test ride the upcoming triathlon course, or ride the time trial up Alp d'Huez, just program it in and go. The computer meashres speed, cadence, wattage, heart rate (with an HRM), etc. Really nice training toy if you've got the expendable $$.

So I'm looking to get a trainer for the winter, since the snow is already starting to fall. Can someone recomend a reasonable one at a reasonable price.

I have never used one or ever even seen one so I am clueless.

I dont know reasonable because its subjective but I bought the TravelTrac Century Fluid Plus Trainer it was a lot quieter than I had expected as noise level seems to be a factor when buying these. And I havent burnt any holes in the carpet. There was a brief moment of panic when I somehow got the thing locked on and was unable to get it off but those damned instructions came in handy.
