Pre-race routine:

Finally got a good nights sleep before a race only woke up about 20 minutes before the alarm went off. Jumped in the shower packed up the car and headed out eating a clif bar on the way
Event warmup:

did a 5 minute jog about 30 minutes before start hit the restroom twice after that. Put on the wetsuit and hit the water about 15 minutes before the start to warm up. I wasn't going to make the same mistake I did last year :)
Swim
  • 09m 41s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a DNF on this swim last year due to OWS feak out. Started in the back of the pack of the 2nd wave. Swam the first 25-30 yards head out of the water then finally put my head under. got to the first buoy fairly quickly then got bunched up in crowd I wasn't able to get past. By the 2nd buoy things cleared up enough to get in a good groove and I cruised into shore.
What would you do differently?:

Either start farther up in the wave or start in the 1st wave with the experienced triathletes.
Use a sleeveless wetsuit instead of fullsleeve
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

was able to find my bike quickly pulled wetsuit top off and put helmet on while taking off bibjohn. Went sockless again with no problems. My aerobottle fell off while taking bike off rack, the racks are a little low for my bike to fit right :( Luckily I had half a bottle of water still in one of my cages.
What would you do differently?:

Rack my bike so aerobottle doesn't fall off
Bike

  • 20.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Went out strong on the bike have trained on parts of this course several times so I knew what to expect more or less. The course is pancake flat except for 1 small hill at about mile 9ish. Passed a bunch of people and was only passed by 2 or 3 :)
What would you do differently?:

Not loose my aerobottle in T1
drink more
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

they don't let us run in transition with the bike so it was a little slower than it could have been. Put socks and shoes on grabbed my hat and race number and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe try running sockless to save time? otherwise nothing
Run
  • 27m 54s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m  min/mile
Comments:

Ran the entire way :) The hills were brutal but I was still able to maintain a good pace. Passed about as many people as passed me so I think my run is improving. :)
What would you do differently?:

more hill training
Post race
Warm down:

walked around grabbed a gatorade water and muffin. Waited for raffle but didn't win anything.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my weight
not enough hydration on the bike

Great job on your race.  I'll bet it felt good to get the monkey off your back from last year.  Well done!  That race course is crazy, isn't it?

I was there this past weekend too.  I had a buddy there doing his first tri, plus I did the swim part for my wife.  It's a nice low key race series.  Those were my first tris ever last year.
