I am now addicted to triathlons and want to see exactly how far I can push my body. I want to know what type of schedule I should plan on for a half ironman mid next year. Maybe early spring. Any tips and should there be any female specific training tips that I should be looking for?

Congrats on a great goal Shauna!  You could follow the 1/2 IM training plan here on the site, I think it's a good one and should give you some guidelines on about how much you need to do to prepare yourself.  You need the Adobe Acrobat reader installed on your computer to view the plans, though it's possible that you already have it.  Here's a link to the plan itself:

If you need Adobe Acrobat, you can download it free here:

Ditto Max, I used the one on this site and it was awesome!  I can't really think of any female specific stuff to say that doesn't apply to ALL tri-training...except that my cycles did get out of whack during my very heavy training.  But I get out-of-whack a lot.

Sorry fellas...

Do a search of the site for most important female-specific information, particularly what shade of lipstick is most appropriate for half IMs.

Cindy, I bet a good LBS can help straighten out your cycles!

I have mapped out a 33 week traiining schedule that ramps me up from the Oly distances to a half IM and is based upon the recommendations in the book, "Going Long"by Don Fink.  Its 33 weeks cause that's how much time I have till my race this Spring.  Its in Excel and is easily manipulated so you can alter it to your liking.  If you'd like me to send a copy, PM me with your email address.

1. Going Long is by Gordo Byrn and Friel. Fink's book is "BeIronFit" ... I only know this b/c I found Fink's book the other day.

2. I would love to have a copy of your spreadsheet, if you don't mind.

Yep, you're right.  I have both books sitting here and just picked the wrong title.  I'm also reading Friel's training bible and will make adjustments based upon what I learn.

FIN16 - 2004-09-22 6:13 PM Any tips and should there be any female specific training tips that I should be looking for? Shauna

Tips - follow a training plan and schedule your workouts;  ride your bike A LOT - get a base of 70-80 miles; practice nutrition tactics

Female specific - hmmm, can't say I've had any female issues related to training.  If I come up with any, I'll post again

Good luck!

I have 3 weeks till HalfIM race and followed the program on this site. The only adjustments I made were that I tended to have longer bike rides than in the program just because I had a reasonable bike base anyway and the bike is a great way to develop endurance without crushing your body. I have a history of multiple overuse injuries and have had none (touch wood!!!) since I started training 4 months ago. I have had regular massages and chiropracty, which I have never done, and felt that this was very helpful. Only female specifics I can think of - long bike rides = increased incidence of fungal infections (solution - treat ASA symptoms and I wash my bike and running shorts in a rinse that is antifungal and antibacterial on a regular basis - not machine as wears them out!) long runs are not generally a good idea in the PreMenstrual period as the hormones have softened all your ligaments putting you at increased risk of injury and weakening of the internal muscles that will pay you back after a few year and a few kids ;-) I would drop schedulled runs to a few days after and shuffle bike and swim sessions instead. I have enjoyed the training so much that I don't really care if it falls apart on the day, I am going to try and continue to maintain the program so I can just hit an Oly or HalfIM at will - what a machine!!! Ha Ha! Seriously I feel fabulous - strong and vibrant both in mind and body. You will have a blast! Deidre
