Pre-race routine:

Was running a bit late this morning. I got to the parking lot at 6:45 and the race started at 7:00 am. I am glad I have done enough of these that I knew what to do to get myself ready. It was a bit stressful to get it all done. I got down to the water at 6:53 am. I was nervous before this tri and I am not sure why. I just kept telling myself I could always stop after the bike or I could walk the run if I wanted to.
Swim
  • 27m 31s
  • 750 meters
  • 03m 40s / 100 meters
What would you do differently?:

Swim more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

I think I did alright on the transition except for it felt messy because I didn't really have time to get all my stuff laid out the way I like it. I wore a big t-shirt because I didn't want to get my bike shirt stuck while I was getting wet like last time. Overall I feel good about my transition.
What would you do differently?:

Get there earlier so I could have my set up the way I like it.
Bike
  • 1h 28m 44s
  • 18.8 miles
  • 12.71 mile/hr
What would you do differently?:

Ride more in Richmond so I can get used to the hills. It will happen, I just have to keep riding.

Transition 2
  • 03m 16s
Comments:

My legs were toasty. I would say it was more shuffling with my bike rather than running.
Run
  • 49m 2s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 15m 46s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

Run more. This working out once or twice a week and then doing a tri is not quite cutting it.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training, not being used to hills.

Event comments:

One of the best races I have done in a long time. It was extremely well marked, there were a ton of volunteers, the volunteers didn't leave their stations, I was cheered on a lot, there were a ton of drink stations on the run, there were support trucks driving along the course, there was tons of pizza and drinks and cookies afterwards, there was a massage therapist, they started on time! The very best thing was that I felt like I mattered just as much as the people in the front. That has been rare for me in the events I have done this year and I am glad to see these guys did it. It was really great.

Course: Well we went upstream for most of the swim. I was hoping to beat my York River time but there was no way with the current. I didn't realize how long it had taken me until I got out of the water. I felt like I did pretty good overall and was able to get my nerves and breathing under control really fast. Another plus was that I was able to sight pretty well and didn't get messed up on my direction ever.

Course: This course was hilly for me. It was rolling hills and it was hard to keep my momentum going. The last hill before the turn around was horrible and I had to walk about halfway up it. It took me 7:32 on that last mile and 3:14 on the way down at 33.3 mph! Woohoo!

Nice job - I'm glad to hear the race went off well. I considered this one, but wasn't quite up for the swim yet - maybe next year! (Hopefully some day we'll be doing the same race & finally meet up!).
