Gladbrook, Iowa
United States
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 43m 17s
Overall Rank = 296/356
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 42/42
Pre-race routine:

woke up and ate Powerbar 1, and drank 20oz water
then drank another 20oz water about 1hr before swim start.
Event warmup:

stretched out, swam ~200y, ate a gel just before swim start
Swim
  • 11m 7s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 02s / 100 yards
Comments:

lots of kicking, pulling at legs, and people running into me, seemed like a bunch of newbees trying to win the gold in the first 200meters
What would you do differently?:

start in the front or the back, and not the middle, it was more of a fight for the first 250meters then actually swimming
Transition 1
  • 02m 57s
Comments:

ate a gel in transition

missed the clip on firs try, had to stop and regroup
Bike
  • 54m 3s
  • 14 miles
  • 15.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Hot+Hills ... defenitely more than other Iowa races I have done so far.
I did not feel good on the bike at all. I also had to pee the whole ride, which made holding the aero position a bit difficult.

Drank ~40oz of water with Nuun tabs
What would you do differently?:

wait to drink the second 20oz of water to just before the swim start, not an hour before.
Transition 2
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

decided not to wear socks this race for the bike or run, when I put me running shoes on the inner lining kept on bunching up, had to take off shoes 2 times before I got it right
What would you do differently?:

wear socks for the run
Run
  • 32m 33s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

did I mention it was hot?
What would you do differently?:

could not do much differently here, I think I was hydrated enought prior to the run, and expected water every 1 mile, there was only water at the start and at 1.5mile. Would bring somoething with me next time.
Post race
Warm down:

drank water and poured it a buch of it on myself to cool off. walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat, hills, the the fact that I did not taper at all this week (put in about 7hrs of training prior to this race)

Event comments:

the 9am start was way too late for this weather.

I got to finally meet Noz (Adam)and his wife Rachel (also a triathlete) and watch him receive his first place hardware. Congratualtions!
