Swim
Comments: This swim sucked. My plan was to go hard on everything since this was short race. I started to the front and left of the field, intent on getting out in front and going hard. That plan died quickly. The lake Michigan waves kept me from getting any kind of consitent stroke going. My sighting was terrible. Every time I lifted my head to find the bouys I either saw nothing but wave or sun glare. I'm not even sure how far off course I swam because it was so hard to see were I was going. What would you do differently?: I don't know. I was unprepared for how rough it was going to be in Lake Michigan. Perhaps train in larger bodies of water. Transition 1
Comments: This went slower than I wanted, largely because I had trouble getting the wetsuit off my ankles. Not usually a problem for me. Other than that it was fine. Bike
Comments: Finally some part of this race went well. This course is F-L-A-T, and I was able to hit it hard. Other than some headwind on the way out, there were no obstacles on this. I passed a fair number of people, and was not passed much at all. (I counted three.) I felt like I attacked the bike course, and an above 20 mph average is really good for me. I was very happy with this. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: Things got a little dicey here. The last stretch before T2 was on a steep downhill. As I went down the hill, I clipped out with one foot and started to slow down on the way to the dismount area. I started to swing my unclipped foot over the seat behind me so I could dismount and run. Apparently I went over the dismount line while still on the bike, and some volunteer yelled "GET OFF THE BIKE" about the feet to my right. It startled me and I fell to my left, leaving some nice road rash on my left elbow and knee. I yelled "shit" got up and ran in to transition. The rest of the transition went fine. What would you do differently?: Not get yelled at while getting off the bike. Run
Comments: This run was fine. Had a little trouble keeping my heartrate down on the hills. But other than that it was good. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: The lake. Event comments: Despite the swim and fall I was happy with this race. I placed 4th in my age group - which I'm sure had more to do with a slow age group than my speed - still it got me a cool plaque and some bragging rights. I like this race, and I was happy with the results I got on Saturday. Last updated: 2007-07-23 12:00 AM

Up early for the 45 minute drive to Racine. Cereal, coffee and water in the car. For once I was at the race site early. I had plenty of time to set up transition, stretch and head down to the lake for a warm up swim.
