Subject: Songs that trigger nostalgia
Ever heard a song on the radio that just made you COMPLETELY go back to a time and place in your life, whether good or bad?

I just heard "Wonderwall" by Oasis on XM. I wasn't much of a fan but I think it was a really popular (read that: overplayed) song when I was in college. Hearing it made me remember hanging out with my buddies and doing stupid college things.

Anyone else? What song, and what memories does it bring?

"Every Day Is A Winding Road" by Sheryl Crow is one of those songs for me.

During Spring Break 1997, a buddy of mine wanted to move from Iowa to Denver to be closer to his girl friend (now wife).  So, I helped him drive across some of the flatest lands known to man, i.e. Iowa, Nebraska, and eastern Colorado.  Once we got there, his gf had a friend who needed help moving from Denver to Vegas.  So, we loaded up again and drove with her.  Seems like we couldn't drive for more than an hour without hearing that song and it seemed somewhat appropriate for all the driving we were doing.

Every time I hear it, I think of him.

"Riders On The Storm" by the Doors.  Everytime I hear this one, it brings me back to when I first met Patti.  I can't play this song on my mp3 player without rolling back through nearly 37 years of memories.

Gotta listen to it now!

"Don't you forget about me" by Simple Minds was the popular song when my high school sweetheart and I were breaking up. It was soooo dramatic. Any 80's corny love song reminds me of him, because they were all "our song." GAWD, it's funny to think about that now! EVERYTHING was so dramatic!

One night - this would be circa 1988 I think - my best friend broke up with her boyfriend.  We got REALLY REALLY drunk and CRANKED the AC/DC..

"Broke another promise
And I broke another heart
But I ain't too young to realize
That I ain't too old to try
Try to get back to the start
And it's another red light nightmare
Another red light street
And I ain't too old to hurry
Cause I ain't too old to die
But I sure am hard to beat

That's why I'm lonely...God, I'm lonely

Let me tell ya what I'm gonna do!

I'm gonna ride on....ride on...."

An unfortunate thought - EVERY ONE of these songs is one of those that gets stuck in your head as soon as you read its title. I'm going to be walking around all day singing Sister Christian now. "It's TRUE...."

There are sooooo many to choose from, but I will go with the oldest I can think ok - Seasons In the Sun by Terry Jacks. This one takes me waaaaayy back to when AM was king, and just always makes me think of a much, much, MUCH simpler time. Sigh.

I won't go into the specific memories (could get me in trouble), but...

Almost anything by Journey, especially the Escape album (and yes, it was an ALBUM back then).

Air Supply.

REO Speedwagon.

Those three albums (yep, me too) are probably close to the top of my list as well (Journey "Escape", Air Supply self-titled, REO Speedwagon "Hi Infidelity"

But #1 song would actually be a tie betwen Take My Breath Away (from Top Gun) and Purple Rain...both memories involve the same girl, and the same summer.

Pretty much every song i've heard before is linked with a memory, but Chad & Jeremy's "A Summer Song" always takes me back...

Firehouse - "I Live My Life for You"

Bon Jovi - "Bed of Roses"

Both bring back memories of my first love.  Aahh...so many years ago.

Anything off of Pearl Jam's 10 triggers the HS memories, smack in the middle of the grunge era.

Early DMB makes me think of my old college GF, too many road trips & nights just sitting around listening to those songs

During the winter, anytime I hear O.A.R. or Buffet, it takes me back to a warm, sunny place on the boat somewhere on Lk Michigan.

Even reading the thread is triggering nostalgia!

Just the mention of Jorney has me flashing back to my childhood home near San Francisco, in the kitchen with my sisters, swaying and crooning in our best Steve Perry, "When the Lights, go down, in the Ci-tayyy.... and the sun shines on, the Bay-ayyyyyy, ooo I wanna be THERE-ERE, in my Ci-tayyyy, oh, woh-oh, oh-oh-oh..."

Another big trigger song is Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here.  But we'll leave the Italians out of this.

That was what my wedding party danced to at my wedding.  It was hysterical.

Another song that brings back memories is Green Day's "Time of your Life."  It was our senior class song.

I was at a sort of nasty business lunch at a Sushi place in London not too long ago. Things were tense, and then "Ripple" (Grateful Dead) came on the radio as background music.

Gone was my suit, replaced with natty tie dye and Guatemalan pants. My hair was back down to my waist, and I was promising myself I'd never work for 'the man'. It was a really funny moment, because it really did take me back to a specific point in time and space, and my own life, almost twenty years ago. It was very, very hard to snap back to pretending to be a grownup.

"Plateau" Meat Puppets

Summer of 1985, home from first year of college, working in a lumberyard, playing poker with a retired pulpwood cutter who had 12 teefs and 1.5 thumbs at lunch. The dude put in a plug of Days Work in the morning, spat twice before lunch, then refreshed the thing at lunch. It took me a full week before I could understand a word he said.

I drank a lot of beer, and took road trips in my '69 MGB to see my girlfriend.

It sucked
