Subject: IM CDA

Ok, I am considering coughing up for one of the charity slots for IM CDA 2008. I'm just a little apprehensive of all the "hills." If it's comperable to some of my training rides around here, I would feel much better. I'm hoping I can get some good feedback here.

On my weekly rides around my house, on say a 20- 30 mile ride, I have several (5-7) that are in the 2-3 min climb range. (keep in mind I'm not going very fast up these- a 2:30-2:45 climb is around .5 of a mile)I can handle those without any problems. And I do on occasion ride up in the mountains, and have a ride that has a net elevation ascent of 1500 ft over 17 miles. This involves a lot of ups and downs, but I generally think I can handle this.

Does this sound like I can handle the CDA bike course? This would be my first IM, and I'm considering it because of the timing in the year and of course, the resort like atmosphere. I decided to let the money thing go out the window. (within reason, of course) But, I'm worried that the course will take it out of me for the run....

Anyone have any advice?

Sign up. You will be fine. There are some decent hills, but just find the biggest hill that you can and do hill repeats once a week and you will be great. Or find a hilly course and ride it over and over and over.

I am from Kansas City and we have some decent hills around here (no mountains by any means) and I felt like the rollers and a couple of bigger hills around here prepared me just fine for everything.

See you in CDA 2008.

just a few points about the CF for CDA. I just got in yesterday and on the email they sent me there were a lot of names so if you are going to do it I would probaly sooner than later. Also hotels are hard to come by but I skipped the list on the ironman website and went through Expedia or something and got one in Post Falls (5 miles away) no reservation fee, only $89 a night no minimum.

Now for the hills, take the previous advice and see you in Idaho!!!

Living here in CDA and riding the course often, I would tell you to train some hills.  The hills on the north part of the course are not killer, but there are several and there are no big recovery stretches.  It is an awesome race (2x for me) and I will hate not doing it next year, but I am doing Canada and they are to close together.

Good luck.

Suzanne--go back to some of the older CDA threads.  I posted the Garmin data from the race.  The hills aren't brutal, it is the number of them that wear you down.

Thanks! I did go back and check some of the older threads, and emailed my coach. She assures me that if I can handle the Saluda Grade in NC, then I'll be fine- she'll have me doing a lot of training rides in the mountains. I think, given the choice of heat, hills, wind, etc. I'll take hills everytime.  Everything else about the race sounds so amazing, I don't think I'm gonna let some hills scare me away....

At least I say that now. Next May I'll be freaking out I'm sure...

First time for me as well.

I'm booked at the holiday inn. Nothing fancy but close to the race or so I hear.

I guess I'm doing hill work for the next 10 months

I did the DESERT HALF IRONMAN (1st one) in Osoyos this year, that had some nasty hills. My legs ended up cramping on the run. i planned on being better prepared this time, maybe.

If I'm in we are renting a house so we can take the whole family. Well extended family. My whole family consists of 4 people.

Right now I know it's gonna be me, my dh, my mom and my MIL. We are waiting to see if my dh's cousin and his wife and her sister and brother in law want to go as well. They are a fun group! I think we are going to rent one of the homes through vrbo.com.

CDA will also be my first IM and I am freaking out about the hills because I truely live in the flatlands. I will be making many trips to the western part of the state for some hill training. My husband will be coming with me; we have rented a small cottage down by the lake ~1 mile from the resort.

I just couldn't stay away.  I am going to be back for a second year to gain my revenge on the run.  Money is being sent to the community fund this week.

This should get my training back on track.  Looks like I need to start riding some hills with Sue (see above) soon!

I just looked this morning and the website says there are no more slots for IM CDA, and I still haven't heard if I'm in yet or not.

I'm nervous as all heck. Today is my birthday and that would be the best present, to get an email that I'm in!

CRAP!!!!!!!  CRAP!!!!! CRAP!!!!!

When I checked last week, there were 50+ spots left for the community fund.  Now - ZERO.  That will teach me for waiting so long to decide.

Good luck to you Suzanne.

I just checked my bank account. They cashed my donation check already but not the race fee check, so I am assuming that's a good sign.

I'd email them again but I'm worried it's like sending your food back to the chef... a definite don't!!

That sounds like a good sign to me.  I'm glad you didn't let the hills scare you.  You'll be fine.  I live on the edge of the TX hill country.  We're definitely not talking mountains.  Pace and Patience....

This will be my first IM too!!!  We're all in it together!!!

Hope you get your confirmation soon.
