It funny how the more one gets into whatever training they are into the more presisly they look into how they excercise and what they eat.

I had an eureka moment today with coffee. more specificly coffee creamer. like most people here i've gotten into the habit of logging exactly what I eat and in what portions. However, i never measured exactly how much coffee-creamer i was putting into my morning coffee. I knew it was more than one and figured it was "about" 2 giving my about 70 cal a cup. Yeah I know thats high but it was my little splurge for the day.

Well today I took out my measuring cup and measured exactly how much creamer i was using. I was shocked to find I was putting in a solid 4 serving in each cup!!! Over the course of the day I would drink 3 maybe 4 cups a day. That tops me out at about 560 cal for just coffee!!! YIKES!! Needless to say I've set about makng a few adjustments.

the moral of the story? Measure EVERYTHING. take nothing for granted.

or just cut out coffe altogether. If you need caffeine, try herbal tea. Its healthier for you and depending on what type you drink offers good amounts of immune boosting nutrients.

I hate it when I eat something & realize that I ate the same item 3 days ago & forgot to log it. Seems to happen at least once a week & is usually a banana or energy bar.

I absolutely hear where you are coming from.  A couple years ago, I started measuring food portions and counting calories to lose weight.  I was absolutely floored by many of the revelations.  For example between my orange juice in the morning, a can of pop at lunch, a glass of wine or whatever at dinner, I was getting 500-600 calories/day just from beverages.  With my base needs of 1800 calories per day, that doesn't leave much room for food.

Oh and yesterday I figured out how many calories there are in a slice of homemade blueberry cake that I made over the weekend.  600 calories per slice!  Wheeeeeeeee doggies!  I knew it tasted good!        Guess I need to halve my portion size to keep things more in line.

My big realization was cereal. The calories listed for most cereals are for much smaller portions than an average adult (much less a hungry triathlete in training) would eat.

What kind of coffee creamer are you using? They have sugar free, fat free, etc. The one I occasionally use has 30 calories per Tablespoon. It's Vanilla Caramel Sugar Free... pretty tasty.

The serving's per container were my crazy revelation. Most people don't realize that a 20 oz. bottle of Coke contains 2.5 servings. So when you look at the calories, you have to multiply them by 2.5 to know what the whole bottle contains. And who only drinks half of the bottle? I don't drink Coke anymore, but it's that way for MANY products.

Gatorade was an eye opener as well.

This is one of my (many) pet peeves. I hate it when companies package something as a single serving then list multiple servings for one package. I know they're counting on people not to do the math, and I hate having to do the math. Rant over.

I used to use the powered stuff that my work supplies til one day I ready the ingredients and found the primary ingredient was partialy hydrogenated oil!! PH oil was another revelation for me. I found after checking that all the so-called sugar free creamers basicly replaced the sugar with PH oils. After reading how really bad PH oils are for you I decided I would rather eat the sugar. At least that is natural and I can burn off. That PH oil crap is created in a lab and is extremely difficult for my body to burn.

Even the stuff I ended up with has PH oil in the ingredients but the label also says it only adds a trivial amount of fat the the product.

In the end though I think i've decided that when my present bottle of the stuff is gone i'm gonna switch to 2% milk and Splenda instead. I cant seems to get a comfortable balance with the creamer stuff.

=On a side note; for anyone that hasn't done it yet, Do some research on Partially-hydrogenated oils. That stuff is absoultly disgusting and has been compared with second-hand smoke in the amount of danger it posess to your health.

Did you know powdered creamer burns? Hold a lighter at waist level and slowly start to empty the creamer onto the flame until it ignites, then dump the rest of the packet. That stuff goes off like gunpowder. I had a co-worker who follows Pritikin show me that years ago.

We're doing the same thing. In case you didn't know Splenda makes flavored sweetners, but I haven't looked at the labels yet.

And thus the nutritional cafe merged with pyrotechnics.

Wow. This is almost worth buying a box of creamer for....

Bet it would make a cool utube video, too. Hmmmm....
