Sunny
Total Time = 20m 28s
Overall Rank = 21/244
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 5/16
Pre-race routine:

one slice of bread with peanut butter at 7am.
Event warmup:

got to the race site about 9:15, short jog around the lake for about 10 minutes, potty stop, kept the clothes on until about 15 minutes before the race. Took a Gu at 9:45. Finished the 8 oz. water bottle. Lined up on the second row, center, behind a very strong runner who was running with his kid in a jogging stroller (he went on to finish in 19 flat).
Run
  • 20m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I had to pee again!!! Got to mile 1 and my bladder was screaming. I've to to stop this. My arms felt so heavy, something I've never experienced. I was trying to run very relaxed, but couldn't get my breathing settled down for about 1.5 miles. Kept pretty steady in position, passed a few, got passed by a few. Tried to let it roll on mile 3, but really had nothing left for the last .1. A 20:00 flat would have been 2nd place age group (which was my goal...) :(

Age group results:
1 253 TRAVIS WILLS 31 CARY NC 19:22 6:14
2 230 EUGENE TOMCZAK II 32 HOLLY SPRINGS NC 20:11 6:30
3 263 TRAVIS MARLEY 32 HOLLY SPRINGS NC 20:11 6:30
4 187 CHARLES RODOCKER 34 KNIGHTDALE NC 20:16 6:32
5 11 BILL BASS 34 APEX NC 20:28 6:35

What would you do differently?:

More hill work. I only recently added this race to the list. Had I planned to run it earlier, I might have done more hill work and speed work. I went out very fast on the first turn (was in about 12th place overall), then let myself get into my own groove (and let a few folks past). I think I needed to let mile 3 roll a little harder, but I don't know...
Post race
Warm down:

Untied the chip from my laces, found the wife and kids, got a drink of water, and cheered in the other competitors. Much different environment than a tri.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills. Heavy arms. No kick at the end.

Event comments:

A 5k PR for me regardless, almost 4 minutes off the last time I ran it in 2005. I really wanted a sub 20:00, but it wasn't to happen today.

Nice run, Bill.

Now just come out and run the IOS Turkey 8K on Thursday and you can have thirds and fourths at the big feast without guilt.

That's quite a PR. Nice job even if you didn't hit the 20:00. You've been working hard, it's just a matter of time. Need hills = Umstead, it is absolutely beautiful right now.

Very nice job on the Raleigh 1/2 as well. You busted your goal there.

Keep up the good work.
