What's your longest treadmill run?

I'm going to have to do my long run 1:40 on the treadmill this afternoon! how do i pass time?

I can deal with the trainer, and actually enjoy it...but the treadmill sucks!

iPod video...burn a DVD onto your iPod, that'll last almost all of 1:40!

3 hrs and 30 min last year while watching all of the IM races recorded on the DVR.  My wife thought I was nuts and the kids brought my nutrition to me, it wasn't all that bad actually.

The most I have run on a dreadmill is 14 miles. TV was the only way I got thru it

I have gone 1 hour on the treadmill once, and if it wasn't for TV, I would have had a hard time with it.  The IPod suggestion is great, as is finding something good on tv to watch.  It's doable, but can be boring.

Why do you have to run on the treadmill? Get outside, your body will thank you for it.

I think 45 minutes is the most I've ever done on a treadmill.  That was when I was traveling on business and wasn't where I could get outside.

I definitely am spoiled living in Florida where we can run outside year around.

I cannot speak for the original poster, but the last time I had a long-run scheduled and stayed inside for the run it was 25 degrees out, with a mix of snow and rain. The wind was about 30mph from the north, and it was really dark out.

It's not like NC up here in MN. Sometimes I actually miss Camp Lejune.

22 miles... almost 4 hours. I alternated between tuning into whatever was on the TV (at the gym), listening to my MP3, and just sort of observing what was going on in the gym.

So explain again why you didn't run outside then???

Unless there is ice on all the places you run, there is no reason not to run outside.  HTFU people .....

Sometimes, HTFU results in injury. Training in winter in MN isn't always conducive to HTFU meaning get outside. One wrong step on a run can result in a hyperextended knee, bum hip, knee or ankle, concussion...

I'd argue that it's easier to run outside if there is ice on ALL the places you run, cuz at least then you expect it. It's the patchy ice that causes problems. Sometimes, the dreadmill is the smart choice - at least it only results in insanity...

I did the HTFU thing in the Marines, I don't have anything left to prove to myself, and could care less about other people's opinion of my toughness.

I'd rather not run on ice if I can help it. Cold, fine. Ice, wind and snow....screw it. It isn't worth it to me, and, even if I did it, it still wouldn't even come close to being truly "tough" compared to my time in the infantry, so why bother??? The bottom line is, compared to my time in the corps, I'm not tough anymore. It's actually something that I am thankful for.

I've done several (5-6) 20 mile runs. 2:45 to 3 hours or so. Mostly I do 60-90 minute runs.

I setup a DVD player and a widescreen TV to watch from my trainer and my treadmill. I watch movies and TV series on DVD. I have cable connected to it, but TV doesn't to have the continuity I want. A Netflix subscription is the way to go. I watch a lot of sports related movies that way.

As for HTFU, I don't see the need. I do this for fun, not to freeze my butt off in pouring rain, break an ankle on an unseen obstacle in the dark, or the like. Seattle is not conducive to winter Ironman or marathon training. Even in the morning, there are too many icy patches covered by leaves, ready to drop you to the ground.

I'm happy to do 20 miles outside, but if the conditions suck or my schedule calls an evening run, then I have no problems staying inside. To me, it's different - not better and not worse.

x2 Running on the treadmill is the worst for long runs.  At least outside you will have some scenery!

Hats off to those of you able to log the miles on the tm.  To me you’re a lot “tougher” if you can pull off a 20mi tm run over an outsider.

For me, I don’t get the enjoyment from a tm.  So to “keep it real” I do nearly all my running outside.  Thankfully I’m doing unstructured,/offseason work when the conditions are poor so my training doesn’t suffer and its easy to adjust what training schedule I may be following.

id rather freeze my off outside in wisconsin than run inside on a treadmill...i tried last week and made it about 1.5 miles before i wanted it to fling me into the wall headfirst! besides after the first 4 minutes outside if youre dressed right, its not that bad!

25 miles at 3 in the morning.  It was a sleep deprivation training run for a 100 miler.

And the very next morning the treadmill died...
